Artega SE electric supercar is coming to the US, we go eyes-on

With the Tesla Roadster ‘s tenure drawing to a close and a proper two-seat replacement seemingly just a twinkle in Peter Rawlinson ‘s eye at this point, there’s something of a coming void in the world of the electric supercar. Artega would love to fill that with the SE. It’s an all-electric version of the company’s GT supercar, and while the GT will not see a release on American shores, we got confirmation from Artega that the battery-powered SE will — eventually. The 375 horsepower motor drives the car to 62MPH in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 126.5. Maximum range is 172 miles, but drive the car “more enthusiastically” and you can expect a more realistic 124. The car was announced earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and here in Frankfurt we were able to spend a few minutes ogling its curves in a variety of interesting colors, including one model with a cut-away fender showing off the positioning of some of the 16 battery modules. 12 of those are scattered around the rear of the car, while four are up front, giving the car a rearward-baised 60:40 weight distribution.Cost is said to be 150,000 euro, or about $207,000. That’s nearly twice the cost of a Roadster. Worth it? We’ll see. The Engadget / eBoy t-shirt shop is officially open, pre-orders start today!

Woo, boy. We’ve been bursting at the seams to share this one, and it’s finally time — Engadget is teaming up with the one and only eBoy ( read our introduction here ) in order to open up our very own t-shirt shop! We’ve worked with eBoy over the years, and we’ve never been let down by their mind-blowing work. Every so often, we’ve offered up a stash of shirts for our dear readers to snap up, and every time, they were gone before sundown. That’s just not right. To remedy said quandary, we’ve worked up a beautiful arrangement that’ll have one of our favorite artists whipping out t-shirt designs for us, and they’ll be handling the orders and logistics as they’ve been doing for years. Pre-orders are live worldwide right now , and initial shipments should start flowing around mid-October. Our first five designs are showcased in the gallery below, and if you’re interested, surf on down to the source link below to grab one (or two!). They’re priced at $24 (US / Canada), or €20 elsewhere, and if you’re curious about sizing, have a look at American Apparel’s size chart right here . We hope you love ‘em as much as we do, and we’ll be giving 50 percent of the proceeds received to Child’s Play Charity , which provides games, books and cash for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America and the world. Obama signs America Invents Act into law, makes patent reform a reality

Patent reform’s been bandied about on Capitol Hill for years now, and last week we finally got both houses of Congress to agree on the language to make it happen. Today, in what was a foregone conclusion, President Obama has finally made the thing official by signing the America Invents Act into law. In doing so, he made the dream of a first-to-file patent system in the US a reality. Of course, the law won’t go into effect for another 18 months, so we’ll have to wait awhile before we find out if it can curb all those companies’ litigious inclinations . Samsung Series 3 350U laptop delivers colorful ultraportable computing to the Korean masses

Sorry folks, this colorful Series 3 lappy from Sammy is for the fine citizens of Korea only, at least for the moment. The 350U weighs in at just under three pounds and 0.8-inches thick, while housing a Core i5, up to a 640GB HD, a 12.5-inch anti-reflective screen, and a battery large enough to keep it chugging along for over eight hours. Really, the big difference between this notebook and the same-sized Series 3 shipping here in the states are the color options. While Americans all get the same gun-metal gray, our friends across the pacific can pick black, silver or pink (you know, for the ladies). The 350U is priced starting at 1,090,000 won, just over $1,000. Check out the gallery below. RePro3D is a ‘touchable’ 3D interface that lets you poke pixies (video)

The illusion of 3D is kind of ruined the moment you reach out and try and grab whatever silly thing is supposed to be protruding from the screen. Researchers at Keio University in Tokyo have started to figure out a solution to the problem, and are calling their system RePro3D. By combining a glasses-free 3D display with an infrared tactile interface , they are able to create a holographic model that responds when “touched.” The next step for the team is to provide feedback via a wearable device, adding the sensation of touch to the already impressive illusion of interactivity. We do have our concerns about the researcher’s motives however. One of the creators, Keitaro Shimizu, told DigInfo , “there are many attractive characters in animations and games, but since those characters only exist within the screen, it feels a little lonely…” We guess getting a girlfriend is out of the question. Check out the video after the break. Gogo to bring enhanced WiFi to Virgin America, expands video streaming on American Airlines

Virgin America ‘s in-flight perks are getting even perkier . This week, the domestic carrier announced that it’s bringing Gogo’s ATG-4 service aboard its fleet of aircraft, in a move that promises to enhance in-flight WiFi capacity by a factor of four. The upgrade is slated to roll out during the first half of 2012, when the company will begin outfitting its planes with Gogo’s directional antenna, dual-modem and EV-DO Rev. B technologies. But VA isn’t the only airline getting in on the Gogo game, as the in-flight entertainment company announced this week that it’s expanding its new video streaming service to American Airlines, as well. American, as you may recall , became the first airline to test the Gogo Vision service back in August, aboard its fleet of 15 Boeing 767-200 planes. Now, the streaming product is slated to expand to a full 400 of AA’s aircraft, bringing about 200 movies and TV shows to entertainment-starved passengers. Movies will be available for 24 hour rentals, with TV purchases good for a full 72 hours. Unexpired rentals, meanwhile, will still be available once you land and can be accessed with the same browser and device you used aboard the flight. No word on final pricing, though Gogo is extending its introductory offer ($1 per TV show and $4 per movie) through October 15th. Taxi past the break for more details, in a pair of press releases. Altec Lansing debuts new ultraportable iMT630 speakers for iPhone and iPod

Altec Lansing just debuted a pair of new portable speaker docks for the iPhone and iPod dubbed the iMT630 Classic and Sport. What separates the two? The Classic comes in black, while the sport has options for teal and red (ooo… fancy). That’s it. Otherwise they’re the same units with a pull out connector and a compartment on the back that holds and conceals the remote when the stand is flipped up. Both docks also feature a rechargeable battery and the ability to interact with Altec’s apps, like Alarm Rock and Music Mood. Both are shipping now for $150 but, before you go, check out the gallery below and the PR after the break, won’t you? Brain scanner app lets you show off your smarts on-the-go

Forget learning how to open a champagne bottle with a saber, because this smartphone brain scanner probably has it beat for coolest party trick ever. After you pull out that 14-channel EEG headset you have lying around, all you need to do is attach the probes to your date’s dome piece to measure his or her neural activity on your Nokia N900 . The app then goes to work, taking binary data and reconstructing it on screen in 3D. The result? A new way to elimi-date Match.com candidates based on the real-time image of his or her melon. We can’t promise it’ll get you a second date, but we can give you a glimpse of the app in action after the break.
