Skype 5.5 for Windows now available, complete with deeper Facebook integration

The beta version has been available for over a month, but those that prefer to play things safe can now download the final version of Skype 5.5 for Windows (and Windows only, at the moment). According to Skype, that version includes a number of additional updates based on user feedback, but the standout feature remains the deep Facebook integration , which will let you call and IM your friends, update your status, and engage in other Facebook-related activities. Skype is also promising “enhanced video call reliability,” and it’s made yet more design changes that promise to “improve your overall Skype experience.” You can judge that yourself by downloading the application at the link below. All said, Q2 wasn’t such a bad one for the black logoed Motorola Solutions, with sales of $2.1 billion, up six percent from this time last year. That number includes $1.3 billion for government sales and $747 million for enterprise, up four and 11 percent over last year, respectively. Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI to its friends) was formed earlier this year , when the tech company split in two. Solutions specializes in things like barcode scanners and two-way radios, while Motorola Mobility Holdings deals with the more familiar (to us, at least) smartphone and Xoom-y side of things. What exactly is a PRS-T1? Well, it’s a new Sony Reader and it just so happens to have swung through the FCC with a WiFi N radio in tow. As you can see above, the regulatory label proudly proclaims this to be a “Digital Book Reader,” though we could have guessed that from the PRS model number. What else do we know? Not much sadly. We’re guess the T1 in the model name indicates that, whatever the panel’s size, it’ll be of the touchscreen variety. (Either that, or this is the tapenade colored model.) Despite Sony’s official denials, looks like that rumored August launch for the company’s latest e-ink devices may actually pan out. We all know what streaming Hoarders and other guilty pleasures via the interwebs has taken off over the past few years. No news there. However, what may be surprising is that, despite the ability to stream in HD to a number of other devices (including your computer), a quarter of all Netflix subscribers view Swamp People by way of the Wii . That’s right, 1080p doesn’t matter for these folks, who prefer to live the simple life… and by that we mean life in standard def. Most viewers prefer to watch instantly via PC for both Netflix and Hulu , with a whopping 89 percent of Plus customers taking this route to catch up on The Daily Show . With those looking to ditch the red envelope and, you know, with Mad Men now available, Wii viewers are sure to increase as a new console is just around the corner . We’re not precisely sure which model this mystery phone is with the neon-green back, but we know it’s from RIM , and it looks an awful lot like some of the early leaked shots we’ve seen of the 9860, aka the Torch . It’s made a visit to the FCC under the moniker RDH71CW / RDP71UW / RDQ71UW, different designations for various frequency flavors we presume, but at this point is only being tested for Bluetooth and WiFi compliance, leaving us guessing as to future carriers. That’s the latest tablet from budget manufacturer Coby lounging around a blue velvety backdrop. The Kyros MID7022 got the customary FCC teardown treatment from the agency in exchange for a little approval. The seven-inch Gingerbread slate sports a microSD slot, HDMI port, WiFi, 4GB of built-in memory, and should be headed to the Home Shopping Network in no time. The price of the Nintendo 3DS in the US is dropping precipitously August 12th from $249 to $169, with other regions getting a similar price break in their respective currency. If you’re one of the 830,000~ US gamers that have already shelled out, don’t be too disappointed as your early adopting ways will be rewarded with free games. The thank you gift for gamers that have logged into the eShop at least once before the price cut will be 10 free NES virtual console games before they’re widely available, plus 10 more Game Boy Advance virtual console games — that Nintendo is apparently not planning on releasing to the general public — before the end of the year. We’ve come a long way since Google first started taking about launching a fiber-based ISP — from beta tests , to hopeful communities , to Topeka fools day , to selecting not one , but two Kansas Cities. Now, it’s “boots on the ground,” time according to the Google Fiber blog: detail engineering starts now. In the coming weeks, Kansas City residents (presumably on both sides of the Kansas / Missouri border) can expect to see El Goog’s engineers measuring phone poles, gathering geographical data, and asking hard-hitting questions, like “What is your address?” All this footwork will help Google get a head start on building that sweet, ultra-high-speed gigabit network. Not the most glamorous bit of Google magic we’ve ever seen, but it’s still exciting to hear that preliminary work has begun. Of course, it would be even more exciting if this were coming where we lived. Opinion spam isn’t a new version of your favorite meat treat, repackaged for discerning canned ham consumers. According to a team of researchers at Cornell University, it’s a growing problem affecting user generated review sites, and the gang is working to stop it dead in its tracks with a new program that’s aimed at tracking down fake reviews . That software, which has been tested on reviews of Chicago hotels, uses keyword analysis and word combination patterns to bust opinion spammers — fakers, for example, use more verbs than their truth-telling counterparts. The as of yet unnamed program apparently has the ability to post deceptive opinions with 90 percent accuracy, but is currently only trained on hospitality in the Windy City. Ultimately, the group sees the software as a filter for sites like Amazon, but, for now, you’ll just have to trust the old noggin to do the detecting for you. Typically, when a new gadget makes its way through the FCC , we have to do a fair amount of digging to get to the juicy details, put Pandigital’s latest 8-inch tablet / e-reader, the SuperNova, isn’t holding anything back. This Android 2.3-powered slate follows in the footsteps of its 9-inch predecessor, the Novel , acting more as a glorified e-reader than a real-deal tablet. Like the Novel, it comes with B&N’s Nook app pre-installed and lacks access to the Android Market — apps can be downloaded via SlideMe. What’s more, it’s got front (0.3 megapixel) and back-facing (3 megapixel) cameras, 4GB of internal storage, HDMI and mini-USB connectivity, support for 32GB micro-SD, and an 8-inch capacitive touch screen. Just about the only things missing from this FCC filing are price and availability, but we have a feeling the pair isn’t far behind.
