Netflix already added video out support to its iPad app a few months ago, and it’s now finally brought the same functionality to iPhone and iPod touch users as well. Unfortunately, it’s not quite bringing all iPhone and iPod touch users up to speed, as the app will only support video out on the iPhone 4 and fourth generation iPod touch. If that doesn’t pose a problem for you, however, you can grab the updated app for free right now from your favorite source of iPhone apps. Continue reading …BlackBerry OS? Dead! iOS? Dead! Symbian? Never stood a chance. Android’s exponential growth has today been illustrated by Nielsen ‘s statisticians who present us with the above chart of recent US smartphone purchases. It shows that over the six months leading up to August 2010, 32 percent of American new phone buyers had grabbed themselves a device with Google’s OS on board, which is comfortably ahead of RIM at 26 percent and Apple at 25 percent. These results corroborate NPD’s figures on the matter — which peg Android at 33 percent of new US purchases — and reiterate the idea that Android is headed to a place whose name starts with D and ends with omination. One more chart showing total market share can be found after the break (hint: BlackBerry still reigns supreme overall). Continue reading …We always knew Darren Murph had oodles of talent and was extremely prolific — but now the man has got the paper to seriously prove it. Our own Mr. Murph was just awarded the Guinness World Record for most posts ever by a blogger. Not only is this a first for Darren, it’s a first for Guinness as well, creating a new category for the group. Darren joined Engadget in July of 2006 (his first post is here ), and almost four years to the day (when these numbers were submitted to Guinness) he’d arrived at 17,212 individual posts (since surpassed, of course). That’s single posts on Engadget, Engadget HD, and Engadget Mobile, not duplicated work. We obviously couldn’t be more proud of Darren and the work he’s done (and continues to do) here, and we think this is an amazing feat for one writer. Of course, this is the guy who did 59 posts in a single day at CES 2008. Seriously. To put it in perspective, his current word count is at 3,389,148. That’s War and Peace about six times over. We asked Darren if he had anything to say, and he gave a nod to Ryan Block (our former editor-in-chief) for giving him the chance to start here (and “not killing me when I passed him early on”). Darren also told us that he intends to defend the title for the rest of his natural life. So would-be competitors, you’d better get started… right… now. Continue reading …Perhaps it should be no surprise, considering the heartbreaking delays ( and $1,000 price bump ) the Scarlet has already endured, but it looks like the project is undergoing a major shift in focus — namely, it will apparently be no longer be targeted towards prosumers. EOS HD quotes RED founder Jim Jannard thusly: The concept of RED was to build a camera with as much capability as possible… for the professional market. Then we thought we could extend it down a bit to the prosumer level. Apparently, that was a mistake. He also says that “plenty of companies [are] dedicated to selling prosumer (short for ‘almost right’) cameras. We aren’t going to be one of them.” And later, “we had no idea what we were doing… Nothing works like it is supposed to.” Ouch. Although we respect the man’s candor (if not his eyewear), it’s hard to say exactly what this all means: is the Scarlet camera going to be scuttled completely, or merely priced out of consideration for the (well-heeled) consumer? Either way, you can officially consider us bummed out. RED founder Jim Jannard calls prosumer Scarlet ‘a mistake’ originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 05 Oct 2010 12:09:00 EDT. Continue reading …You may or may not have noticed, but Western Digital just followed up on Seagate’s earlier efforts by breaking out a 3TB external drive of its own — one that has just a single HDD within. The newest My Book Essential not only houses a 3TB drive, but also packs a USB 3.0 port on the rear and the same rounded black shell that you’ve come to know and love / hate. If that’s far too much for you to swallow (or simply too large to haul around), the My Passport Essential and My Passport Essential SE lines are also being bumped to USB 3.0, with the former shipping in a 500GB version and the latter in 750GB / 1TB. Both of those guys are powered entirely over USB and ship in a variety of mind-bending hues, with pricing starting at $99.99 for the 500 gigger and running up to $249.99 for more space than you’ll ever need . Continue reading …Sharp has been working on miniaturizing its so-called Plasmacluster line of ion-generating products as of late, most recently with the pocketable IG-CM1 . Well, imagine if you took an IG-CM1 and duct-taped it to the back of a Japanese-style flip phone… what would you get? You’d get something like this concept being shown off at CEATEC , we think. Found in the booths of both Sharp and NTT DoCoMo, the basic idea is that the phone surrounds you with pleasant, invigorating ions while you chat away, repelling viruses and generally making you a better, happier, and healthier human being; in addition to the functional prototype, DoCoMo was also showing off totally fake (and considerably sexier) design concepts of how a personal ion generator / phone combo could look down the road. We’re not aware of any commercialization plans here — but considering that Plasmacluster technology comes pre-installed on some Toyota cars sold around the world, it’s not a far leap to say that we could see it in a production phone, too. We suppose. Continue reading …Batteries die, and when your phone has a WiMAX antenna plus dual cameras and a gigantic screen, well, those batteries tend to meet their maker sooner than later. Enter hacker extraordinaire Ben Heck with a simple and cheap solution: a hand-powered charger. Ben took an inexpensive flashlight with a crank on it, disassembled it, and ran the leads from the internal motor to his HTC EVO 4G . The exciting (or at least excited) video below is proof that it works, but we’re wondering which would die first: the 4G’s battery, or your arm after cranking on this thing for an hour or two. Continue reading …If you’ve been following your NFL broadcasts, you’ll have noticed an entirely unusual hue infiltrating your typically macho sport — in most clashes this weekend players on both teams could be seen sporting pink paraphernalia alongside their usual uniform colors. This courageous act of pinkification was in aid of the US National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which Microsoft is also supporting in its own small way. That small way is called the Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000, which will retail from now until the end of September of next year for $40 and contribute a $4 donation per sale to the Kamen for the Cure charitable fund. Continue reading …If only this was a hoax. Yes, that’s some bitter talk alright, because this Motorola MT716 from China Mobile is almost the perfect Droid that we once had on our dusty wish list: a similar slider form factor but with a hard-cap keyboard, as opposed to one with spongy mashers. In fact, eagle-eyed readers might have already spotted that this is the exact same keyboard as featured on the Cliq . Compared to its distant relative, other differences on this OPhone include an 8 megapixel camera (with dual-LED flash and 720p camcorder feature), an extra VGA front-facing camera, TD-SCDMA radio, WAPI connectivity (WiFi-compatible), and CMMB TV streaming; otherwise, you’ll find the same weedy 600MHz TI OMAP3430 chip, 480 x 854 LCD , AGPS and Bluetooth 2.1 inside. Now if you’ll excuse us — we have a petition to write up. Continue reading …NVIDIA’s Fermi architecture has been around the block or two in the consumer universe , but it’s touching the company’s pro line today with the introduction of the entry-level Quadro 600 and mid-range Quadro 2000. Boasting 96 and 192 CUDA processor cores, respectively, these guys utilize the new Scalable Geometry Engine technology to “deliver dramatically higher performance across leading CAD and DCC applications such as SolidWorks and Autodesk 3ds Max.” More interesting still, however, is the design of the Quadro 600 — it touts a half-height form factor that can be crammed into just about anything. Oh, and both of these boards have 1GB of graphics memory and are compatible with 3D Vision Pro — you know, in case you need a round of Avatar between research projects. The pair is available now in North America for $199 and $599 in order of mention, with plenty more of the nitty-gritty awaiting you beyond the break.
