It may not be the first electric Hummer out on the roads — we hear a certain Terminator-turned-Governor has one — but Nation-E’s so-called AngelH1 is something of a first nonetheless. Not only is it an all-electric Hummer H1, but it packs a 60 kW battery that lets it double as a mobile charging station for other vehicles, construction sites, or even buildings in an emergency situation. No word on pricing or availability just yet, but it looks like Nation-E is taking a bit of a cue from DieHard to demonstrate its battery technology — the company will be using one of its 40kW batteries to power a three-hour DJ set at the E-Car-Tec exhibition in Munich, Germany later this month. It’s not quite a common practice just yet, but it looks like the PlayStation 3 could be following in the PSP’s footsteps in order to get around folks jailbreaking the device . As MCV reports, anyone buying Electronic Arts’ new “Medal of Honor” game will first have to update their PS3 to the latest 3.50 firmware (conveniently provided on the disc) before playing — that firmware also, of course, has the convenient side effect of blocking the ability to jailbreak the console. No word on any other games that will follow suit, but we have sneaking suspicion that this is something PS3 users will have to get used to. Boom: Apple was just awarded a patent on pinch-to-zoom for multitouch displays. That’s the first directly applicable patent we’ve seen on the gesture since we first started looking during the Apple / Palm war of words in January 2009, and it certainly gives Apple some potent ammunition against its competitors — although there are some specific limitations on what Apple’s been granted that will prove to be important. Let’s break it down, shall we? Patent #7,812,826 was first applied for on December 29, 2006, and over the course of the patent process the claims have been significantly narrowed to cover a very specific set of actions: A multitouch display detects at least two contacts. Those contacts perform a first gesture. That gesture adjusts an image in some way: magnification, orientation and rotation are specifically claimed, but the patent is broad enough to cover virtually any adjustment. The first set of contacts is broken. A second set of contacts is detected. The second contacts perform another gesture within a pre-determined period of time . The gesture continues to adjust the image in the same way. It’s steps 5, 6, and 7 that are critically important here: Apple doesn’t have a patent on “pinch-to-zoom” generally, but rather pinching to zoom, and then pinching to zoom again within some fixed period of time. How long that period lasts is totally up in the air, but it has to be defined somewhere — this patent doesn’t really apply unless there’s a clock running and a second gesture takes place. Still, it’s the first granted patent on the now-ubiquitous gesture we’ve seen, and based on its filing history it’s essentially effective as of December 30, 2005 — long before anything multitouch products with pinch to zoom had arrived on the market. That’s no small weapon to bear — we’ll see what Apple does with it. P.S.- Apple was also awarded some 17 other patents yesterday, including two more that deal with multitouch, but none of ‘em are nearly as interesting as this one. Hit the via link for more on those. Let’s be real: almost every phone looks better in white . Okay, so that’s strictly a matter of personal opinion — but if you’re a white phone kind of person, turn your attention away from the forever-delayed iPhone 4 and toward a couple that are launching shortly thanks to some new details from Best Buy. Turns out Verizon’s white Fascinate and AT&T’s white X10 are both scheduled to hit on October 24, alongside the Dell Streak — not in white, by the bye — followed by the HTC Surround on November 8 (which we already knew). Any of ‘em can be yours for a $50 deposit. Come October 18, T-Mobile USA will be shaking things up in the prepaid market with a handful of new options that finally acknowledge users — yes, even those on prepaid plans — are gobbling data in droves. Unlimited voice and text with 2GB of data will run $70 a month; the same plan with just 100MB of data will run $50, and for $30, you’ll be able to get a pretty interesting concept that includes any combination of 1,500 minutes and text messages plus 30MB of data. For $1.49 per day, you’ll be able to sign up for a Web DayPass, which gives you unlimited browsing capability on any data-capable phone; T-Mobile tells us BES isn’t currently supported, but that shouldn’t be an issue for most. If straight-up data is more your thing, you’ll want to check out the T-Mobile Jet (pictured), T-Mobile’s first dedicated prepaid data stick. The new modem commemorates the launch of a handful of prepaid data options, including $10 for a weekly allowance of 100MB, $30 for 300MB monthly, and $50 for 1GB monthly. We’d hoped that T-Mobile would resist the urge to cap data and follow through with the bandwidth throttling option instead, but then again, we suppose things work a little differently in the prepaid market. While our eye-hand clicking capabilities are usually relegated to “upload image” and “RT” and the occasional “ban commenter,” that doesn’t stop us from dreaming of a world where we’re an elite vid-gamer (that’s “video gamer” to any n00bs out there), an entire virtual world at our beck and call. Razer can help us live that dream with its Naga MMO mouse , which has a wild assortment of numbered buttons on its side to be theoretically assigned to those high-powered abilities we’ve theoretically invested countless hours into obtaining — or theoretically paid a good price to a gold farmer for. Now Razer has a wireless version of the 5600 dpi laser mouse, using the same wired / wireless tech of the Razer Mamba (which is nice for when a theoretical gaming session stretches beyond the 12 hour continuous use mark the mouse is rated for) to let you plug in at will. There’s also a charging dock that conveniently doubles as the 2.4GHz wireless base station. “That’s great, Razer,” you might say, “but what will I put this mouse on top of?” They’re glad you asked. Razer is simultaneously launching a new ultrasmooth mousepad dubbed “Ironclad,” built out of a single piece of aluminum. The pad will retail for $60 this month, with the mouse following for $130 in November. Look, we’ve all been there — you cruise home to hang with mom and pops, and one of the two asks if they can see those vacation images you took of the grandkids last month. “They’re on my hard drive at home,” you reply. Weeping commences, and your mum in particular scolds you for not “getting with the program” and “investing in a NAS drive.” It’s about time you listened, don’tcha think? Buffalo does, as it has just revealed a trio of new LinkStation drives (Pro, Pro Duo, Pro Quad) in the V-series ranging from 1TB to 8TB in size. The whole family looks mighty stylish for a Buffalo, and they’re all eager and willing to stream to DLNA-certified devices (hello, PS3 and Xbox 360!). The company claims that all three members — which sport a 1.6GHz CPU — can hit transfer speeds up to 76MB/sec, and a gratis WebAccess app enables you to pull up those images for gramps with your iPhone or iPad. The whole lot is available now starting at $189.99 (topping out at a whopping $1,039.99), and given that we both know you’ve know been schooled… well, let’s just say a new level of expectations have been set. 285MB/s read speeds from the Callisto series ? Phsaw. We need at least twice that to get us out of bed in the morning, and Mushkin has our wake up call. Its announcing the EP Series of SSD drives, based on SandForce SF-2000-series processors, pledging 6Gb/s burst speeds. That sounds mighty impressive, but if you capitalize that B it turns into a somewhat less stunning figure of 768MB/s. Sequential read and write speeds are 500MB/s, while each can sustain a rate of 60,000 operations per second. That’s a lot of I/O, and it’s coming to gilded racks sometime in the first quarter of 2011.
