Live from Samsung’s Android event!

We’re here live at Samsung’s mysterious Android event… actually, it’s not that mysterious since we’re dead certain we’re about to see the well-leaked Continuum make its official debut. Regardless, we’re here and we’re bloggin’, so settle in and let’s see if Sammy and Verizon have any actual surprises for us, shall we? Large Hadron Collider wants to make mini Big Bangs, Sheldon and Leonard disapprove

The Large Hadron Collider has been busily colliding protons since it opened last year, but a new set of experiments starting later this month could tell us more about the beginnings of the universe than we’ve ever known before. At CERN, where the LHC is housed in Geneva, scientists will attempt to create mini Big Bangs (the full-sized one is generally accepted as having created the actual universe about 13.7 billion years ago). The process will involve shooting lead ions through the 17-mile long collider, and accelerating them to relativistic speeds before colliding them head-on with protons . According to popular wisdom this should cause an explosion resulting in the creation of brand spanking new particles. Although similar experiments have been conducted on a much smaller scale at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, this will be the first time scientists have attempted to accurately recreate conditions exactly like the Big Bang . Samsung confirms Continuum dual-display Android handset for Verizon

After a rather large complement of leaks , Samsung has finally confirmed its Continuum phone for Verizon, via Twitter of all places. The phone will ship on November 11th. Samsung is billing it as the “first phone with a dedicated ticker display,” referring to the secondary 1.8-inch color screen below the capacitive touch buttons. There’s a Samsung Mobile event happening at 6PM EST that will undoubtedly shed more light on this Android handset, but for now we expect the specs to be in line with other Galaxy S-series handsets. You know, except for the ticker part. Samsung is also proud to announce that it’s shipped 3 million Galaxy S phones in the US, a sizable chunk of the 7 million or so sold globally so far . Logitech Revue with Google TV review

The Logitech Revue is in many ways the flagship Google TV launch device. While Sony integrated Google’s new media platform into its line of Internet TVs and the Internet TV Blu-ray player , the Revue is a dedicated Google TV device, albeit with a few additional features like optional an optional video calling camera. It’s also the cheapest, at $299, and possibly the easiest to add into an existing A/V system, since it has Logitech’s Harmony universal remote technology built-in. We’ve already covered Google TV as a platform , so let’s take a closer look at the Revue to see if Logitech’s riff on the connected TV is worthy of its lead-dog status. Read on for the full… Revue review! Shocker! Laptops placed on laps will overheat you where you don’t want to be overheated

Scrotal hyperthermia — even its name sounds like a terrible, horrible thing. Yes, gadget enthusiasts, we’re talking about the vastly underrated problem that is the overheating of a techie gentleman’s reproductive parts. A study recently published in the Fertility and Sterility journal confirms what we’ve long known — that heat escaping laptops sat on laps can and will raise the temperature in your external offspring storage units — but adds a bit of handy additional info as well. Firstly, it turns out that keeping one’s legs together to balance the laptop is mostly to blame, as it doesn’t provide enough airflow to let heat escape, while lap pads have been found to be entirely ineffective in protecting testicles from rising in temperature. Another note of import is that the men in this study failed to notice when their scrotal thermometers rose above what’s considered safe, so we’d just advise doing your mobile blogging Engadget style: from a bar, a coffee table , the trunk of a car, or even a humble desk. iOS 4.2 bringing speed improvements to iPhone 3G?

The recent iOS updates have mostly been welcome improvements for iPhone 4 and 3GS users, but it’s been a decidedly different story for folks sticking to their venerable iPhone 3G . Not only have they been left out of some of the fun , but they were dealt a serious performance hit with iOS 4.0 that was only somewhat corrected by IOS 4.1. Could iOS 4.2 finally bring things back up to speed? According to the folks at TiPb , it just might — they’ve now tested the iOS 4.2 gold master on an iPhone 3G and found that performance was noticeably improved across the board. Head on past the break to check out their results for yourself, and keep your fingers crossed that you’ll actually see a similar improvement when the official update finally hits your 3G. Dell Venue Pro on sale at Microsoft stores, but good luck getting one

So, just as was rumored , it seems Dell pushed a small handful of Venue Pros to Microsoft’s seven flagship stores for sale today. We just spoke with a friendly rep who told us they were “going fast” and didn’t sound too confident that we’d be able to get one by the time we got down there, but theoretically if we did, it’d be $199 for a new line (or an eligible upgrade) or $449 outright. If you manage to score one, that’ll put you about a week ahead of everyone else — they aren’t expected to be available straight from Dell’s site until the 15th. On a related note, Dell’s website is showing two configurations for the phone — an 8GB and a 16GB model — though none of the stores we called could tell us which one they were stocking. Let’s hope for 16, eh? [Thanks, Andrew and @FocusedProverbs ] Dell Venue Pro on sale at Microsoft stores, but good luck getting one originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 14:47:00 EDT. PlayStation 3′s Bluetooth headset slims down, shines on, adorns ears later this month

My, what a difference a couple years makes. As we suspected , Sony is updating its old Bluetooth headset design with a decidedly more elegant model. Here’s what we’ve got: dual mics, USB pairing, in-game status indicator, a charge cradle that doubles as a desktop mic, and of course, a giant mute button for when you have only moments to smack yourself in the ear and curse loudly about your good-for-nothing teammates. It’s also smaller and glossier — and rocking the same $49.99 price tag. When’s it arriving? Soon, later this month. When is that, exactly? Have patience. Microsoft slide chronicles the journey from Portable Media Center to Windows Phone 7

In case you missed it, Wired has a new piece out on the (very brief) history of Windows Phone 7. Unfortunately, the article pulls all punches, and skates through some bizarre statements from Microsofties, including calling Kin “a worthwhile risk that resulted in important lessons,” and the real head scratcher of the piece: “Software is like making a movie and building a skyscraper. You’re not quite sure how it’s going to stand until it comes out in the end.” Still, we were glad to find this slide (pictured above) in the article’s photo gallery, chronicling the journey of the Metro design language from Microsoft’s ill-fated Portable Media Center , to the vaguely successful Zune products, and around at last to the newly available Windows Phone 7. A bit of comeuppance for 2004′s ahead-of-its-time, PlaysForSure-laden iPod killer? We like to think so.
