Study: Alcohol More Harmful Than Crack

Startling but true, according to one of those expert sources that make these kinds of pronouncements: Alcohol is more harmful to both users and those around them than crack cocaine. It’s worse than heroin too. The study that says so was just published and publicized by the U.K. medical journal The Lancet. Here’s a link to the study itself; the BBC expounds below.

The NY Times, Charmed by Jon Stewart’s Shtick on the Mall, Skips Inconvenient Facts

The New York Times was clearly enchanted by Comedy Central host Jon Stewart’s “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” held on the National Mall on Saturday afternoon. Brian Stelter and Sabrina Tavernise reported the story on Sunday, “ At Washington Rally by Two Satirists, Thousands — Billions? — Respond .” While Stelter and Tavernise nailed the political tone as “overwhelmingly liberal,” the rally's agenda didn't stop them and other Times reporters from enjoying the rally both in print and through live blogging while hyping the numbers for a gathering that was apparently smaller than the one held two months ago in D.C., “Restoring Honor,” sponsored by Fox News host Glenn Beck. The print edition story ran with a photo of Stewart and Stephen Colbert with Yusuf Islam, the former singer Cat Stevens, who supported the deadly fatwa against novelist Salman Rushdie in 1989 (more on that later).

MRC’s Bozell Addresses Media’s Closing Campaign Pitch: Bashing the Tea Party

NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center president Brent Bozell appeared on last night's special Sunday edition of “Hannity” to address what's easily become the liberal media's closing campaign tactic for liberal Democrats: attempting to discredit the Tea Party movement and its candidates. For example, in an October 26 interview with former president Jimmy Carter, Chris Matthews suggested Tea Partiers are simply the mindless dupes of corporate interests. “Remember the 'poor, uneducated and easy to command types?'” Bozell asked Hannity. To the liberal media, “[t]hat was the religious right 20 years ago. Now it's the Tea Party,” Bozell noted on the October 31 “Media Mash” segment: read more

Pre-Election Notable Quotables: ‘The GOP’s Agenda Has to Be Stopped’

One day before Election Day, the MRC has a fresh new edition of Notable Quotables posted over at MRC.org. Topics this week include: the liberal media’s pre-election meltdown, with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann frothing that the election of “unqualified, unstable” Tea Party Republicans “would destroy America from within,” and Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter engaging in open electioneering: “The GOP’s agenda has to be stopped.” To read it online, posted with five videos with matching MP3 audio, plus a sixth quote with a matching audio clip, go to www.MRC.org . For NewsBuster’s readers, here are some of the choicer quotes from the last couple of weeks, reflecting liberals’ increasing desperation as the election clock ticks down: read more

The Phantom Left

By Chris Hedges The American left is a phantom. It is conjured up by the right wing to tag Barack Obama as a socialist and used by the liberal class to justify its complacency and lethargy. Barely 36 hours before Washington State voters go to the polls, CBS News aired a 14-minute unregulated in-kind campaign expenditure on behalf of “ Yes on 1098 ” and its chief cheerleader, Bill Gates Sr, sandwiched by Lesley Stahl hailing rogue Reagan adviser David Stockman as “brave” for advocating the end to the Bush tax rates and imposition of a 15 percent national income surtax. Stahl trumpeted: One Republican brave enough to go public is David Stockman, President Reagan's budget director. He says all the Bush tax cuts should be eliminated — even those on the middle class. And he says his own Republican Party has gone too far with its anti-tax religion. She segued to how “many of the states are in the same boat, facing huge deficits with few prospects for cutting, which is why Washington State is joining the movement across the country to tax the rich,” championing how “Bill Gates Sr., has poured his own money into backing Initiative 1098. The tax would bring in $3 billion a year, to be spent mainly on education, which has suffered cutbacks as the state reels under a massive deficit.” read more
