Rand Paul Makes It Official

Rand Paul is projected the winner of Kentucky’s Senate race. He was polling way ahead going into Election Day, so it’s not a shocker, but his victory might be considered the biggest triumph—so far—for the tea party. It’s going to be a long night. AP via The Washington Post: Anti-tax crusader Rand Paul’s election victory Tuesday gave the tea party a flag bearer to send to the Senate and hope that more like-minded Washington outsiders would be elected to Congress. The first-time candidate and champion of small government upended the Kentucky Senate race by trouncing the Republican establishment’s hand-picked candidate in the May primary and then winning decisively against Democratic state Attorney General Jack Conway on Tuesday. Schwarzenegger Won’t Say Whom He Voted For

California’s current governor refused to tell reporters whether he voted for Democrat Jerry Brown or fellow Republican Meg Whitman in Tuesday’s election. Schwarzenegger has not endorsed either candidate for governor. Los Angeles Times: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger cast his ballot in Brentwood on Tuesday morning, but he remained tight-lipped about who he voted for to succeed him. “I will tell you all about it later on,” Schwarzenegger said as he entered a polling place at a school with wife, Maria Shriver. Schwarzenegger has declined to endorse fellow Republican Meg Whitman or Democrat Jerry Brown, saying he wanted to avoid offending anyone as he focused on fighting Proposition 23, the ballot measure that would delay his signature environmental achievement, the state’s landmark climate-change law. Exit Polls: It Really Is the Economy, Stupid

Exit polls have started to leak and the results are not at all surprising: 80 percent of voters in this election are worried about the direction of the economy, but most blame Wall Street and George W. Bush for the crisis ahead of President Obama. About 40 percent self-identified as tea party and voted Republican. Most voters polled as they left their precincts said the country is heading in the wrong direction and both parties were unpopular. One in three voters said someone in their household lost a job in the last two years. The Huffington Post: About a third say their household suffered a job loss in the past two years, but that didn’t give a clear direction to their voting. They divided over which party to support in Tuesday’s House races. About four in 10 say they are worse off financially than they were two years ago. More than 80 percent said they were worried about the direction of the economy over the next year. Only about a quarter of voters in Tuesday’s House races blamed Obama for the nation’s economic troubles. But about half think Obama’s policies will hurt the country. Dan Rather Complains: Republicans ‘Demonized’ Nancy Pelosi, Turned Her Into a ‘Villain’

Ex-CBS broadcaster Dan Rather on Tuesday appeared on MSNBC and lamented the fact that Republicans have turned Nancy Pelosi into a “villain” and “demonized” her. The famous broadcaster also implied that sexism was involved, gesturing to his female co-panelists, “She is from San Francisco. She is a woman.” Before being interrupted, he added, “And the three of you can figure out-” Speaking of sexism, on the June 11, 2007 Morning Joe , Rather attacked Katie Couric, his successor at the CBS Evening News, this way: “The mistake was to try to bring the ‘Today’ show ethos to the evening news and to dumb it down, tart it up in hopes of attracting a younger audience.” Rather on Tuesday opined of Speaker Pelosi: ” Ideal villain. And they made a villain of her and they have demonized her from day one. And what was said earlier, what's made it easy for them is she's been so effective. ” The CBS journalist couched his analysis by saying he wasn't judging the Republicans' action, suggesting, “This is the way politics are.” read more
