‘Peace Meals’: Breaking Bread With War’s Forgotten Families

“Peace Meals” is a tribute to all my host families who live, and perish, on the edges of the world. It is my invitation to connect with the ordinary people trapped in mass violence of the last decade in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other countries.

Cantor’s Promise to Hold Oversight Hearings Prompts CBS to Regurgitate Impeachment and Cite ‘Witch-Hunt’ Fears

Contrasting a “contrite” President Obama with a “less conciliatory” Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell, CBS reporter Nancy Cordes on Thursday night conveyed Democratic concern about likely House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's pledge to hold oversight hearings as she recalled “a barrage of damaging probes, one of which ended in impeachment hearings.” Cantor, Cordes asserted, has called “for more investigations into the administration, with quote 'one major oversight hearing each week.' That worries Democrats, who remember what happened the last time Republicans controlled the House during a Democratic presidency.” She then challenged Darrell Issa, now the ranking minority member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform : “Democrats

Blogging Mom Gives Haters a Cyber-Spanking

Here’s another salute to the mother and blogger known online as Nerdy Apple Bottom, who had absolutely zero tolerance for anything resembling homophobia directed at her 5-year-old son, whose big wish this Halloween was to dress in the guise of a cartoon girl—Daphne from “Scooby Doo,” to be precise. Mama Nerdy was just fine with this, and she had some choice words for those who weren’t. Mary Elizabeth Williams in Salon: On Friday, the self-described “cop’s wife” hinted about her child’s experience at school that day on her blog by saying, “I am so proud of my brave little Daphne…. He had a few moments where he was worked up about people making fun of him, but mustered up the courage to go for it. He held his little orange wig high today,” and “for those of you that looked at my sweet boy in disdain this morning, or looked at me funny for ‘allowing’ my son to be what he wanted to for Halloween, or made those snide and unnecessary comments—your lives are small, your tact is lacking, and you can SUCK IT!” Read more Related Entries November 3, 2010 Moore: 1, Berlusconi: 0 October 26, 2010 ‘Fable III’ Gives Gamers Gay-for-Play Options

MSNBC’s Cenk Uygur Claims George W. Bush Confessed to ‘War Crimes’ in New Memoir

In a wretched attempt to re-litigate the past, MSNBC contributor Cenk Uygur indicted former President George W. Bush for war crimes. Bellowing today from his regular perch on “The Dylan Ratigan Show,” Uygur mischaracterized the 43rd President's position on the waterboarding of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as “go ahead and torture him basically” before demanding that Bush be prosecuted for allegedly violating Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. “Now it seems to me we have a confession here of a war crime and a clear violation of international and United States law,” proclaimed Uygur. “President George W. Bush should go to jail for at least 10 years.” The alleged “confession” Uygur referred to is an excerpt from Bush's new memoir, “Decision Points,” in which the former commander-in-chief reaffirms his decision to condone the use of waterboarding as an enhanced-interrogation technique for suspected terrorists. Haiti Hunkers Down for Tropical Storm Tomas

It’s a tad late in the storm season for this, but tell that to the people of Haiti: Less than a year after the island nation was rocked by a cataclysmic earthquake, Haiti is now in the path of a powerful tropical storm, Tomas, that could do considerable damage if it keeps picking up steam.

Balt Sun Media Critic: MSNBC ‘Pumping Irrational Fear’ Into Viewers

There's a cable news channel out there operating with a single partisan voice, and doing its best to scare the pants off of viewers as the new Congress approaches. Listening to much of the media, you might think that network was Fox. But in fact Fox has a wealth of opinions on air, though most of its prime time hosts are consistently conservative. And while certainly a number of critics try to paint FNC as “fear-mongers,” it's been MSNBC that has really gone full force with the doom-saying this week. Baltimore Sun media critic David Zurawik is absolutely livid about it, and has devoted considerable space this week to bashing MSNBC for its apocalyptic tone. read more
