MRC’s Bozell Shares Thoughts on Civil Political Discourse on C-SPAN’s ‘Washington Journal’

Earlier this morning, NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center (MRC) president Brent Bozell sat down with C-SPAN's Libby Casey for an interview on “Washington Journal.” Among other topics, Bozell addressed media coverage of the Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) shooting. “Where's the harm in having this discussion about civil discourse?” Casey asked Bozell. “I think it's a very good discussion, don't get me wrong…. But don't tie it to what happened [in Arizona],” Bozell answered. “Don't say it's because Sarah Palin and the crosshairs [on her PAC's targeted midterm race map].” For the excerpt, check out the video embedded below the page break or click here for MP3 audio . “When you use words like that, 'liberal sickos' and language that has its own punch to it, are you adding to the negativity in [political] dialogue?” Casey asked Bozell, referring to a recent press release critical of media coverage. “I'm going to respond when someone in the press suggests that I'm responsible for this, that the movement I believe in is responsible,” Bozell countered. The NewsBusters publisher agreed that political discourse has deteriorated “on both sides,” before sharing a story about his friendship with Sam Donaldson, a liberal journalist whom he personally respects but with whom he has many political disagreements. “Always professional, never personal,” Bozell recalled Donaldson's motto regarding political debate. “If we can all remember that… then that resolves everything.”

Congress Prepares To Extend Patriot Act Again, With No Real Opposition

enlarge Via Raw Story, this unappetizing news that the Patriot Act is likely to be renewed for yet another year: Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) has introduced a little-noticed bill that intends to once again renew controversial provisions of the Bush administration’s USA Patriot Act that are due to expire this year. When the act was first signed into law, Congress put in some “sunset” provisions to quiet the concerns of civil libertarians, but they were ignored by successive extensions. Unfortunately, those concerns proved to be well founded, and a 2008 Justice Department report confirmed that the FBI regularly abused their ability to obtain personal records of Americans without a warrant. The only real sign of strong opposition to the act was in 2005, when a Democratic threat to filibuster its first renewal was overcome by Senate Republicans. Since the bill introduced by Rogers on Jan. 5 was virtually identical to the extension passed last year, its passage was seen as likely. “Given the very limited number of days Congress has in session before the current deadline, and the fact that the bill’s Republican sponsor is only seeking another year, I think it’s safe to read this as signaling an agreement across the aisle to put the issue off yet again,” the conservative-leaning Cato Institute’s Julian Sanchez wrote. “In the absence of a major scandal, though, it’s hard to see why we should expect the incentives facing legislators to be vastly different a year from now,” he added. “I’d love to be proven wrong, but I suspect this is how reining in the growth of the surveillance state becomes an item perpetually on next year’s agenda.” As senator, Obama promised to support reforming the Patriot Act, but voted in favor of extending it in 2005 and 2008. Similarly, he signed last year’s extension into law with little fanfare . FBI and Department of Justice officials had consistently argued that restricting their blanket authority to conduct warrantless searches would harm national security. Candidate Obama said in 2007 that if he were elected president there would be “no more National Security Letters [NSL's] to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime” because “that is not who we are, and it is not what is necessary to defeat the terrorists.” Much like Obama’s vow to close the Guantanamo Bay military prison, the use of NSL’s has also continued. Most recently, Obama’s Department of Justice sent an NSL to micro-blogging site Twitter, seeking information on all 635,561 users who followed secrets outlet WikiLeaks — a list that included Raw Story. Obama’s campaign website insisted that he has consistently said he would support a Patriot Act extension that strengthens civil liberties. Action on his campaign pledge had yet to emerge by the start of 2011, and no significant reforms were reflected in the newly Rep. Rogers’ extension. Former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), perhaps the Senate’s strongest opponent of the Patriot Act, was defeated by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) in the 2010 mid-term elections.

The official GOP house organ, Fox News, is all over this , of course: Beleagured GOP Chairman Michael Steele on Friday dropped his bid stay atop the party for another two years after falling further behind top challenger Reince Priebus on following several rounds of voting. Steele, whose tenure has been marked by controversy and embarrassment, realized he was fighting a losing battle. Now he is urging supporters to vote for Maria Cino. Priebus, the Wisconsin Republican Party chairman, won the fourth round with 58 votes. Maria Cino moved into second place with 29. Steele and Ann Wagner both got 28 votes followed by Saul Anuzis with 24. Ballots are being cast by 168 committee members. Eighty-five votes are needed for victory. Ah, Michael, we’ll miss ye, laddie. You were always good for the entertainment. Video will be up shortly.

Amy Goodman at Democracy Now interviewed one of the survivors of Saturday’s tragedy in Arizona, and we heard a familiar observation : We speak with Tucson shooting survivor Eric Fuller. A 63-year-old disabled veteran, Fuller had campaigned for Arizona Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in her reelection campaign and was at the supermarket in Tucson on Saturday to meet with her. He was shot in the knee and also wounded in the back. “It looks like Palin, Beck, Sharron Angle and the rest got their first target,” Fuller says. “Their wish for Second Amendment activism has been fulfilled.” Cue the right-wing waaaaaahmbulance. I wonder if Megyn Kelly or Bill O’Reilly will bring Fuller on Fox to browbeat him as they did Sheriff Dupnik for expressing the same view.

Rachel Maddow: More Guns Does Not Equal Less Crime

Click here to view this media Rachel Maddow points out for us that despite Representatives Louie Gohmert and Trent Franks’ fantasies about more guns equaling there being any less crime, in the states where we have more lenient gun laws, the opposite is true. These idiots want to take us back to some version of the Wild Wild West and pretend that if everyone has the ability to shoot each other, somehow fewer people would end up being shot. Rep. Gohmert apparently thinks that having guns on the House floor is a good idea as well. Texas Republican Louie Gohmert Drafting Legislation To Let Guns on House Floor : To Louie Gohmert, the answer to violence is more guns , and allowing members of congress to carry them on the House floor.“It’d be a good thing for members of Congress who want to carry a weapon in the District,” he said. “I know friends that walk home from the Capitol. There’s no security for us,” he said, adding that the measure would deter people from attacking members. “There is some protection in having protection.”He said there were times during the health care debate last year that he felt afraid, including when a stranger approached him on the street and started screaming at him. Gohmert’s staff is preparing a bill that would allow guns. Of course, what do you expect from a man who believes women come to the United States to have “ terror babies ” and to whom comparing Obama to Hitler is “brilliant.” And Rep. Trent Franks thinks if we’d just had one more shooter during that tragedy in Arizona, all would have been well. Trent Franks: ‘I Wish There Had Been One More Gun’ In Tucson — There was, and he almost shot the wrong person. Here’s more from Rachel Maddow’s blog on why more guns in the hands of citizens doesn’t ever equal less people being killed with guns with some stats on states and gun ownership. enlarge Credit: The Rachel Maddow Blog
