I don’t think anyone’s surprised about this . I just wonder if anything will happen as a result — even if it’s just that Karl Rove is no longer invited onto news shows as some shining example of political genius. It’s not difficult to do most things if you’re willing to ignore the rules: WASHINGTON — The Bush White House, particularly before the 2006 midterm elections, r outinely violated a federal law that prohibits use of federal tax dollars to pay for political activities by creating a “political boiler room” that coordinated Republican campaign activities nationwide , a report issued Monday by an independent federal agency concludes. The report by the Office of Special Counsel finds that the Bush administration’s Office of Political Affairs — overseen by Karl Rove — served almost as an extension of the Republican National Committee , developing a “target list” of Congressional races, organizing dozens of briefings for political appointees to press them to work for party candidates, and sending cabinet officials out to help these campaigns. The report, based on about 100,000 pages of documents and interviews with 80 Bush administration officials in an investigation of more than three years, documented how these political activities accelerated before the 2006 midterm elections. This included helping coordinate fund-raising by Republican candidates and pressing Bush administration political appointees to help with Republican voter-turnout pitches, particularly in the 72 hours leading up to the election when Democrats took control of the House and Senate for the first time in a dozen years. The Office of Special Counsel, a relatively obscure federal agency, is charged with enforcing the Hatch Act, a 1939 law that prohibits federal employees from engaging in partisan political activity. Certain members of the White House political staff — including the top aides at the Office of Political Affairs — are exempt, as are the president, vice president and members of the cabinet. But the law still prohibits the use of federal money, even by these officials, to support political causes.

Continue reading …CNN's 7 pm Eastern hour program John King USA was the only program on Monday and the following morning on Tuesday that mentioned the March for Life in Washington, DC. Anchor John King mentioned the pro-life demonstration only in passing, and omitted crowd numbers and footage from the March. CNN.com's write-up on the annual event downplayed the number of attendees as merely in the ” thousands .” King led his evening program with a brief about an Illinois court ruling that former Obama aide Rahm Emanuel was ineligible to run for Chicago mayor. After playing a sound bite from Emanuel, the CNN personality then gave moved on to the March for Life, and added illegal immigration to it as an “emotional issue:” KING: And anti-abortion activists stage a March for Life here in Wash ington. It's a big annual event, but we'll map out how the major fights over emotional issues, like abortion and immigration, this year are in the states, and we'll debate Colorado's proposal to copy the Arizona immigration law. The anchor read this brief into the camera, without showing any footage from any point during the March. Thirty-five minutes later, King raised the abortion issue again, but instead of mentioning the demonstration earlier in the day, he focused on the pro-life victories on the state level. He devoted just under 30 seconds to his brief, and spent the rest of the 9-minute segment to a debate over a proposed law in Colorado targeting illegal immigration: KING: The new Republican majority in the House has new policy proposals, but a lot of the action, especially on tough issues like abortion, immigration, is out in the states, especially after the big conservative gains in the 2010 elections. Let's take a look. Here are some anti-abortion trends in state governments. If you see yellow here, that means the governor and the legislature are both anti-abortion. The blue states- the governor is anti-abortion, and there have been a number of developments in legislative proposals in these states . We've told you about those before. We'll keep an eye on them. Eric Marrapodi's article about the pro-life walk on CNN.com on Monday evening mentioned how ” thousands of abortion opponents joined Monday afternoon in a cold march on Capitol Hill ,” but as NewsBusters's Tom Blumer noted earlier on Tuesday, ” around 10,000 Catholics …met to pray for an end to abortion at a pro-life vigil Mass in D.C. on the eve of the annual March for Life.” Most, if not all of those, attended the following afternoon, and that morning, ” more than 27,000 young people attended [a Mass at the Verizon Center and a "parallel event" at the D.C. Armory], which began after dawn and included readings by youths in hooded sweatshirts and jeans, contemporary praise music and dozens of priests hearing confessions in the sports arena's dining area,” as the Washington Post reported on Monday. So just between those three events (with some possible overlap), tens of thousands of people attended, if not over 100,000, if you go by pictures of the event . On the other hand, Marrapodi stated near the end of his article that only ” about 15 abortion rights supporters stood outside the Supreme Court building as the march unfolded. They chanted and held signs of their own, imploring the court and Congress to keep abortion legal.” This demonstrated that he at least knew better than former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez, who was completely out of the loop as to “which side is represented the most” at the 2010 March for Life.

But what does it say about CNN that Rick Sanchez can get fired but Erickson is still working, even after writing such violent prose like this? CNN’s Erick Erickson is also Editor-in-Chief and ” Dear Leader ” of the conservative blog Red State, so this charming passage posted by “The Directors” is presumably his doing: Here at RedState, we too have drawn a line. We will not endorse any candidate who will not reject the judicial usurpation of Roe v. Wade and affirm that the unborn are no less entitled to a right to live simply because of their size or their physical location. Those who wish to write on the front page of RedState must make the same pledge. The reason for this is simple: once before, our nation was forced to repudiate the Supreme Court with mass bloodshed. We remain steadfast in our belief that this will not be necessary again, but only if those committed to justice do not waiver or compromise, and send a clear and unmistakable signal to their elected officials of what must be necessary to earn our support. That “only if” construct means that — according to Erick Erickson’s Red State — “mass bloodshed” will be “necessary” if elected officials don’t overturn Roe v. Wade. Again: Red State doesn’t say “mass bloodshed” may occur if elected officials don’t do what is “necessary to earn our support” — it says such bloodshed will be “necessary.” Truly, I don’t think you could expect the man who referred to Justice Souter as a “goat-f@#$ing molester” and Michelle Obama as a “Marxist harpy” to elevate the dialogue. It’s just not within his sad, over-compensating little wheelhouse. But this kind of carelessly eliminationist rhetoric–especially in the light of the Tucson shootings and the Dr. Tiller assassination–is frightening to see so unabashed. And it would be irresponsible not to speculate if CNN was aware of it when they touted Erickson for their SOTU analysis . Perhaps you might ask CNN. Politely, of course. Edie Emery is listed as the contact person for CNN’s SOTU coverage. Maybe Ms. Emery is unaware of the Son of Erick’s body of work.

Continue reading …Last week I wrote a post entitled: The Media should ignore Michelle Bachmann’s SOTU cry for attention speech Tuesday, but they won’t. SInce I’ve been monitoring the media over the past six years I could predict that the MSM would jump on the chance to give the Tea Party some free publicity, and CNN has done just that . Michele Bachmann — means that it’s worth staying tuned in after Obama finishes. (CNN announced plans Monday night to carry the Ryan and Bachmann’s speeches in their entirety!) The minority party response has been a bit of a mixed blessing in recent times — think Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal in 2009 — and Ryan is the latest rising star to take on the challenge. His task is made even more difficult by the fact that Bachmann will be giving a response of her own — one likely to highlight the divide that remains between the GOP establishment and the tea party crowd. It’s a near-certainty that Bachmann’s speech will get more attention than Ryan’s; how does the GOP establishment respond to that reality (if at all)? When Cillizza says Bachmann’s speech will get more attention than Ryan’s is really an indication that many MSMers constantly need chaos and competing narratives in their world. Paul Ryan’s speech just isn’t juicy enough. Here’s a question: Would CNN have covered Alan Grayson if he’d have given a progressive rebuttal speech after Kathleen Sebelius delivered the Democratic party-sanctioned one? Some in the GOP are upset with this decision. Greg Sargent: Here’s an interesting twist on Michele Bachmann’s plan to offer her own Tea Party-flavored response to Obama’s State of the Union speech: It turns out GOP aides are annoyed with CNN for agreeing to air her speech in its entirety. Originally, Bachmann’s response was going to be available for viewing only on the Internet. But CNN has announced that her speech will be shown in full in addition to broadcasting the speech from GOP Rep. Paul Ryan, who was picked for the official response by the Republican leadership. GOP aides are unhappy with the decision, because it risks making the opposition look conflicted — as if the two are trying to upstage one another — muddling GOP efforts to offer a unified response. “CNN is basically inventing a conflict that doesn’t really exist,” a GOP aide emails. “It’s not responsible journalism.” To the GOP, it’s not responsible journalism because it makes them look like a party in disarray. To me it’s not responsible because it’s unwarranted and unnecessary coverage of a publicity hound from a news network that should know better. Atrios writes: Simple Answers To Simple Questions Steve asks: I’m really not sure what to make of this. In fact, I’m a little surprised CNN would agree to this, just as a matter of fairness — viewers will hear one speech from a Democrat, followed by a speech by a far-right Republican, and then followed by another speech by a far-right Republican? If a liberal Dem announced this morning that he/she is delivering some remarks reflecting on the SOTU tonight, would that also be aired on CNN’s national airwaves in its entirety? No. Oh, by the way, Weigel adds that CNN has been in cahoots with the Tea Party already: I’d just point out that the CNN has a longstanding romance with the Tea Party Express, the PAC that’s putting on the Bachmann speech. Later this year, the network and the PAC (and potentially other Tea Party groups) are co-sponsoring a presidential debate between Republican candidates. So, not shocking at all for the network to promote this and then claim a higher purpose. This has been another edition of simple answers to simple questions. Indeed. CNN wasn’t as much a 24/7 Tea Party promotional channel as Fox News was, but it gave it plenty of free pub. This is just more of the same craven behavior that drives everyone to different news channel.
