US financial crisis was ‘avoidable’

Wall Street executives, US regulatory agencies, and the US federal reserve are all being blamed in a new report into the causes of the 2008 financial meltdown. The country’s presidential commission also concluded the financial meltdown could have been avoided altogether. But even as it wraps up its two year inquiry, the 10-member panel remains sharply divided over the causes. The report reflects the views of six Democrats – while the four Republicans have written dissenting opinions. It also lays much of the blame on what it says are the “reckless” practices of financial firms like Fannie Mae, AIG and Bear Stearns. It says poor controls led to excessive borrowing and risky investments on mortgages. It also faults “weak” government regulators like the Securities and Exchange Commission and US Central Bank – for failing to rein in the banks they supervised. Singled out is former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan – for backing de-regulation practies that accelerated the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Lobbyists are also being heavily blamed. Al Jazeera’s Nick Spicer reports.

Tea Party Councilmen Daniel J. Halloran’s ‘Snow Story" unraveling in New York

Credit: NY Post Councilman Daniel J. Halloran is getting heat for possibly a phony story The Tea Party didn’t care who they voted for in November as long as they were not from the left. And the latest one to be exposed as a kook is about to face the snowstorm of his nightmares. You might have heard about the NY Post’s breaking story that sanitation workers sabotaged doing their jobs in a blizzard because of a feud with Mayor Bloomberg. These garbage men really stink. Miles of roads stretching from as north as Whitestone, Queens, to the south shore of Staten Island still remained treacherously unplowed last night because of the shameless job action, several sources and a city lawmaker said, which was over a raft of demotions, attrition and budget cuts. “They sent a message to the rest of the city that these particular labor issues are more important,” said City Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Queens), who was visited yesterday by a group of guilt-ridden sanitation workers who confessed the shameless plot. Halloran said he met with three plow workers from the Sanitation Department — and two Department of Transportation supervisors who were on loan — at his office after he was flooded with irate calls from constituents. The snitches “didn’t want to be identified because they were afraid of retaliation,” Halloran said. “They were told [by supervisors] to take off routes [and] not do the plowing of some of the major arteries in a timely manner. They were told to make the mayor pay for the layoffs, the reductions in rank for the supervisors, shrinking the rolls of the rank-and-file.” Well, the Post’s key witness isn’t looking too good: Evidence Is Elusive on Charge of a Blizzard Slowdown The story rocketed around New York City when streets went uncleared after the Dec. 26 blizzard: Sanitation workers, angry about job reductions, had deliberately staged a work slowdown. — And it occurred because one man, Councilman Daniel J. Halloran, Republican of Queens, said five city workers had come to his office during the storm and told him they had been explicitly ordered to take part in a slowdown to embarrass Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg . But the more that investigators look into Mr. Halloran’s story, the more mystifying it becomes. Mr. Halloran said he had been visited by two supervisors in the Transportation Department and three workers in the Sanitation Department. But the two transportation supervisors did not back up his story in interviews with investigators, according to two people briefed on the inquiries. And Mr. Halloran has steadfastly refused to reveal the names of the sanitation workers. Mr. Halloran expects to testify this week before a federal grand jury looking into the question of a slowdown, according to a person familiar with his intentions, and it is not clear whether prosecutors will try to compel him, under oath, to divulge the workers’ names. Meanwhile, investigators had hoped that extensive publicity would bring out others with knowledge of the purported plot. That has not happened, according to the people briefed on the investigations, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigations are continuing. This leaves prosecutors with no proof that anything occurred. “When you’re talking about establishing a negative, I don’t know how it’s going to get firmer,” one person briefed on the inquiries said. Mr. Halloran declined to be interviewed for this article. All the evidence is not in yet, but it appears another weirdo is getting caught up in a bizarre web of lies. read the story because it’s full of insane s–t. He’s part of some fringe religion called the Theodism. WTF is that? During his 2009 campaign, his faith was briefly an issue. He is an adherent of Theodism, a neo-pagan faith that draws from pre-Christian tribal religions of northern Europe, and he led a branch in the New York area. He campaigned as a conservative Republican with the support of Tea Party organizers, advocating personal responsibility and limited government. The story gets weirder and weirder. In 2008, Mr. Halloran sternly criticized the city’s Buildings Department after it cited him for building a bathroom in the basement of his home without obtaining the required permits. Shortly after winning election, he accused the department of issuing improper citations for illegal basement conversions that had been called in by home repair companies hoping to get work fixing the violations. Then, last month, he requested a building permit for a $60,000 project to add a second floor onto his Cape Cod-style home. On Jan. 3, the Buildings Department denied the request, saying it would make the house too big for the area’s zoning. The timing of the permit was unusual, given the recent financial difficulties faced by Mr. Halloran and his wife, Cynthia. In January 2010, Wells Fargo began foreclosure proceedings on their home. In November, Ms. Halloran, a registered nurse, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, seeking to wipe away $116,521 in credit card debt, while retaining a 2005 Jaguar and their home. Her debts include $14,777 owed to Home Depot, $29,000 on three Chase credit cards and $58,000 on two American Express cards. The couple has an annual salary of $166,660, according to bankruptcy records and Council salary rules. Mr. Halloran’s spokesman, Steven Stites, said that the couple was in the process of a divorce, though no public court records have been filed, and that they planned to sell their house. For the Koch brothers and the GOP Elders, he’s a perfect politician for their cause. And the Tea Party movement has not been interested in facts or the truth so they got what they deserve. Halloran is also backing up as fast as he can on his original assertions. In a letter published in The Chief-Leader, which focuses on municipal labor issues, Mr. Halloran seemed to feel conflicted about all the uproar. In the letter he defended his original assertions about the slowdown, but also suggested it might have been small in scope, involving “a few bad apples.” “My goal was never to make headlines or anger people,” he said. I do hope that if he did lie about this story that he couldn’t run fast enough to the NY Post with, then he deserves everything he’s going to get. And so do the Post editors. I’m just saying.

Probe into Franco-era kidnappings

In Spain there has been a formal demand for an investigation into baby kidnappings that took place under the regime of General Franco. A group representing the families affected say hundreds of thousands of babies were stolen from clinics. It is believed the abductions took place well into the 1980′s, after the death of General Franco. Sonia Gallego reports

You know, honestly, this is probably one of the least offensive thing I’ve heard on Rush Limbaugh in a while. Not that it isn’t racist and offensive, but for crying out loud, the wealth of examples of offensive Rushbo soundbytes out there are so vast. Nevertheless, when a constituent brought this segment to the attention of California State Senator Leland Yee, he agreed that Rush was going out of his way to be racist and called for a boycott of Limbaugh’s advertisers . Objecting to Stern’s mocking of the Chinese language last week, California State Senator Leland Yee is launching a boycott of Rush Limbaugh’s advertisers, and he’s enlisting help from civil rights groups to gain traction. Yee was outraged over Limbaugh’s January 19 program, where he mocked Chinese President Hu Jintao because his speech was not being translated. Yee was singled out by Limbaugh on his show as one of those people who were not happy with his comments. Yee tells the Contra Costa Times , “I think this is very damaging for children (to hear that) Rush Limbaugh thinks it’s OK to make fun of another language or make fun of those individuals who may speak another language.” See, but for those brain-dead dittoheads, that’s threatening Rush Limbaugh’s First Amendment right to be offensive on a international, syndicated platform (you know that the Founding Fathers specifically included the EIB radio network in the Constitution, they did!), and thems just fightin’ words. So Leland Yee, he was asking for death threats as far as they were concerned. Mayoral candidate and state Sen. Leland Yee said racist death threats were faxed to his San Francisco and Sacramento offices today. They appear linked to his recent criticism of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh. The anonymous faxes, laced with racial epithets and misspellings, were addressed to “JoBama Rectum Sniffing Moron LEELAND LEE” and call Yee a “fish head,” according to a copy provided by Yee’s office. The faxes include a drawing of a U.S. flag-adorned pickup truck towing a noose that is looped around what appears to be a caricature head of President Barack Obama. The document says: “Without exceptions, Marxists are enemies of the United States Constitution! Death to all Marxists! Foreign and Domestic!” It also says: “Achtung! Fish Head Leeland Lee. Rush Limbaugh will kick your (insert racist and profane words here) and expose you for the fool you are.” Wow. Racist AND violent death threats? Based on loyalty to a conservative talk show host? I’m sure this happens on the other side too…

David Gergen supplies some cover for GOP: Bachmann ‘Reinforced What Ryan Said’ ‘But Provided a Lot of Facts and Figures’

Click here to view this media Apparently David Gergen agreed with fellow CNN contributor Erick Erickson following Michele Bachmann’s response to President Obama’s State of the Union address that either Michele Bachmann or Paul Ryan had any factual information to share with us. GERGEN: But I agree with Erick, she reinforced what Ryan said. She reinforced what Ryan said. She came at it a different way but provided a lot of facts and figures. Facts and figures huh? Okay David. As I already linked in my post with Bachmann’s speech , Media Matters’ Political Correction decided to be a whole lot more responsible than CNN with fact-checking of Michele Bachmann . Granted they had a research team to put work before they had to weigh in on what Bachmann said, unlike the immediate response here, but don’t tell me that these talking heads at CNN didn’t realize that Bachmann was telling some obvious lies as well. And don’t tell me that CNN could not have put a fact checking team together as quickly as Media Matters did if they wanted to. Since their management apparently doesn’t care that they barely need to be one step above the right wing liars over at Fox, I’m sure they won’t have any problems with what was said during this segment. And you can’t really say time is a factor with their lack of fact-checking on Bachmann since a day later, they’re still getting it wrong . Good thing we’ve got that “best political team on television” looking out for the rest of us, isn’t it? Here’s a little more from Digby on this: Bachman? Hilarious. I wonder if Palin is going to make fun of her odd use of the teleprompter. But more hilarious than that was the response of the CNN gasbags, who said she reinforced Ryan’s Reaganesque message, but (according to David Gergen) with more facts and figures. Meanwhile, gasbags everywhere were very concerned that Obama didn’t concentrate more on deficit reduction and the obvious necessity to destroy Social Security and Medicare as soon as humanly possible. They seem to be on something of a crusade. Here’s more of the transcript via CNN of their round table pretending that they weren’t giving a crazy lady air time by choosing to air Bachmann’s SOTU response. BLITZER: All right, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann speaking on behalf of the Tea Party movement. She’s the chair of the Tea Party Caucus in the House of Representatives, making the case — we’re going to dissect what she said. Erick Erickson is here; Anderson Cooper; members of the “Best Political Team.” I want to go to John King, though. He’s up on Capitol Hill. Give us a thought on this extraordinary development. Usually we just get one official response. Today we got two. KING: Well, Wolf, she said right at the top, it was not a competition with the official Republican response, but in many ways it was. In tone, it was very different. You heard the president of the United States, especially talk about health care, saying, “Let’s not re-litigate the last two years. Let’s look forward and fight about other issues and debate other issues.” Well, that Tea Party address from Michele Bachmann was a re- litigation of the last two years. She used “Obama care” over and over again. She said “repeal Obama care.” Her tone was a bit more alarmist. You heard Mr. Paul Ryan say, “I would like to work with the president. His tone was much more conciliatory.’ But Paul Ryan’s tone was much more conciliatory. Let’s see where we go. That was a very much a Tea Party message of fighting President Obama. And the challenge, Wolf, is not just for the president. The challenge is, “How does the new Republican House majority manage that energy, that verve, that confrontational spirit from the Tea Party members at a time when it, too, is on trial with the American people. The president has a lot to prove, but so does the new House Republican majority. And the Tea Party’s faction in it makes Speaker Boehner’s job’s a tough management challenge. BLITZER: Let’s get Erick Erickson to wear in. Eric, she wanted to be in the Republican leadership. The guy said no to her. Is this her little way of responding to that? ERICKSON: You know, I don’t think so. And you know, having seen this speech now and read through the transcript, for several days since this was announced, the narrative that’s been built up is, even by some Republicans, is this is going to be in opposition to what Paul Ryan says. But this speech very much seems to reflect it. We build up these narratives in anticipation before we know what we’re going to get. And here we’re also talking about how this is somehow combative towards Republicans. This actually, I think, played very well off the Paul Ryan speech and got to the nuts and bolts. It’s what, when you listen to the State of the Union political addresses or any of these other political address, you sometimes wish they would get to the point. That’s what she did. That’s what she did. That’s very authentic for the Tea Party movement. MARTIN: How simple is this? Paul Ryan said our debt is the product of many presidents and congresses. Yet when you hear she speech, she said we wondered whether the president would cut spending and implement real job creating policies. Was she talking about President Obama or president Bush? Republicans taking some form of responsibility is they say deficits were high under President Bush. To sit here and somehow suggest that all of a sudden things were great prior to President Obama coming in, clearly that mistakes the reality of where this country was in 2008. BLITZER: Because David Gergen, the national debt doubled during the eight years of the Bush administration. Six of those years Republicans also controlled the congress. GERGEN: Yes. And President Obama in his State of the Union laid the blame for the deficits and the debt squarely on George W. Bush. Two wars that weren’t paid for, you know, prescription drugs that weren’t paid for, tax cuts that weren’t paid for. So each side wants to make its partisan points on this. But I agree with Erick, she reinforced what Ryan said. She reinforced what Ryan said. She came at it a different way but provided a lot of facts and figures. BLITZER: You know, Candy, it’s one of these nights that we have to absorb a lot and sometimes it will take days for us to fully appreciate what happened here. CROWLEY: It is. But I’m reminded, listening to Michele Bachmann here, what John Boehner said this morning, it is what it is, and I think that’s about right. BLITZER: All right, guys. This has been an amazing night, I must say, one that I’ve enjoyed, listening to these different perspectives. The debate is only just beginning in Washington on all of these issues. The president of the United States is going to have to deal with a Republican majority in the House of Representatives. He’ll have a much smaller Democratic majority than he used to have in the U.S. Senate. This is one of those times when we could see a dramatic shift by the president. We’ve already seen some drama already. We’re going to continue all of our coverage right now with Anderson Cooper and 360.

Editor's Note: In the last 24 hours, State Senator Leland Yee (D-CA) has incriminated Rush Limbaugh for a racist fax sent to him by an unidentified individual which allegedly read, “Rush Limbaugh will kick your Ch–k ass and expose you for the fool you are.” NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center (MRC) President Brent Bozell issued the following statement regarding the media reaction to this charge: This is part of a systematic, coordinated campaign designed to smear Rush Limbaugh. We’ve seen it before, over and over. The media helped propel the bogus story about the “phony soldier” by twisting Rush’s comments into an attack on U.S. troops. They validated the completely bogus quote alleging that Rush endorsed the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – which was later proven to be a complete fabrication. And the list goes on. This fax smells to high heaven. Before Yee attacked him, Limbaugh had never spoken about him. Limbaugh has no reason to want to attack him. Limbaugh has nothing to do with this. But the Yee camp sure has a lot to gain – especially from all the free publicity this gimmick is giving them and his political ambitions running for Mayor this year. So let's see if the so-called ‘news’ media, which are so obsessed with talk radio, will investigate and expose who is behind these smears, instead of doing the Left's dirty work and spreading smears against a talk radio giant who has never uttered a word of malice against Senator Yee. It reeks to high heaven. Let's see who has the decency to investigate this.” Be sure to check out our MRC's October 2009 Special Report, “The Left's Character Assassination Campaign Against Rush Limbaugh.”

Speaking of ‘WTF moments’: Palin launches into weird babble about Spudnuts

Click here to view this media Sarah Palin almost talked dirty to us last night on Greta Van Susteren’s Fox show: PALIN: Speaking of last night, that was a tough speech to have to sit through and kind of stomach, because the president is so off base in his ideas on how it is he believes government is going to create jobs. Obviously, government growth won’t create any jobs, it’s the private sector that can create the jobs. And his theme last night of the State of the Union was the WTF — you know, winning the future. And I thought, OK, that acronym — spot on! There were a lot of WTF moments throughout that speech. In Palinville, this is what passes for cleverness — along with such witticisms as “lamestream media” and “lock and load”. Plus, it fits her whole naughty-librarian schtick — we all know what that ‘F’ stands for, don’t we? It’s enough to make one collapse in a gale of giggles. In a later segment, she expanded on the “WTF Moments” with one of her own: VAN SUSTEREN: Governor, last night there was a lot of talk about the ‘Sputnik moment’ that the president talked about. Um, do you agree with him — is this our moment? PALIN: That was another one of those ‘WTF moments’ that when he so often repeated the ‘Sputnik moment’ that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. He need to remember that what happened back then with the former Communist USSR and their victory in that race to space — yep, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time that it resulted in the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union. Pardon this brief interjection from Karen Famigheti at Media Matters, responding to identical dumbassery from the Dumbest Blogger in the Wingnutosphere: It’s mind numbing to have to point this out, but Obama’s reference to Sputnik refers to the U.S. competing against the Soviet Union during the Cold War space race. In calling this our “Sputnik moment,” Obama was calling on America to “reach a level of research and development we haven’t seen since the height of the Space Race” in order to create jobs and remain competitive. He was not expressing sympathy with the former Soviet Union. Ah well. Sean Hannity indulged in precisely the same obtuse dumbassery last night. But really, Palin was just warming up her dulcet vocal cords for the real coup de grace : PALIN: So I listen to that Sputnik moment talk over and over again and I think, ‘No, you don’t need one of those. You know what we need is a Spudnut moment. And here’s where I’m going with this — and you’re a good one, because you’re one of those reporters who actually gets out there in the communities, find these hard-working people and find solutions to the problems that Americans face. Well, the Spudnut shop, in Richland, Washington — it’s a bakery, it’s a little coffee shop that’s so successful — 60 some years, generation to generation, a family-owned business. It’s not looking for government to bail them out and to make their decisions for them. It’s just hard-working, patriotic Americans in this shop — we need more Spudnut moments in America! And I wish that President Obama would understand — in that heartland of America, what it is that really results in the solutions that we need to get this economy back on the right track, it’s a shop like that! Ooooookay. Whatever you say, lady! Actually, I grew up with Spudnuts. They were wildly overrated doughnuts that supposedly used potato flour. They were a chain popular in the interior West mostly; we had one in my hometown too. Here’s a brief history of them. And here’s a link to the Spudnut shop in Richland that Palin extols. I’m hardly one to look down on small businesses — they’re a vital part of the economy. But even a Spudnut shop can’t delivery its doughtnuts if the federal government doesn’t provide it with infrastructure like freeways and water-reclamation projects — all keys to Richland’s economy. Moreover, the Spudnut shop in Richland certainly wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for government-created jobs: for most of its history (especially after 1940), the chief source of employment there has been the Hanford Project nuclear-reactor testing station. Good ol’ Palin is always good for a twofer: Loopy and clueless all in one swell foop!
