Click here to view this media Ed Schultz had some of the most amazing coverage of the protests this Friday night as his show went live in Wisconsin instead of MSNBC’s usual edition of Lock Up and this interview with The Nation’s John Nichols was no exception. Schultz and Nichols discussed why the tea party and Breitbart are coming to town in Wisconsin this weekend. They’re afraid labor is winning this battle, and they should be. Nichols: Governor Walker is clearly cornered at this point. I can tell you as somebody who’s covered him for a long time. This man doesn’t want to be where he’s at. He would love to have a way out. That’s one of the reasons why the tea party is coming to town tomorrow. They’re going to rally here. They’re going to do that for a reason. And that is because they’re trying to shore the governor up. They’re trying to scare him from backing down. The fact of the matter is these people are winning. On Thursday, these people are winning. On Thursday, they connected with the state Senate in such a powerful way that 14 Senators made the ultimate sacrifice for Wisconsinites. They went for a weekend in Illinois. Now today, today they connected with the Assembly sufficiently that the Assembly adjourned action. These are victories each day and there’s simply no question. The power here right now is in the streets, not in the capital. If these people stay out here, if they keep bringing these kinds of numbers to the street, I think that you’re going to get to some point where the governor has to back down. Schultz: Has this, this national coverage that has now cast itself upon this protest, has this changed the dichotomy of it, knowing as far as the resolve is concerned that’s it’s almost as if now, they can’t back down? Nichols: Well, that is the great challenge. Look, Walker is cornered. He’s in a very tough position. You’ve seen the polls. You had a poll up showing a 51-43 split, there was one showing a two to one split. Schultz: It did, but he said that he was not going to allow a few thousand protesters make decisions for three million Wisconsins tonight. What about that? Nichols: Well, here’s the challenge Ed. You and I both know that we’re in a spin battle here. And the Walker folks are going to try and spin it that the kind of people, the Wisconites, you look at these people, who will come out on a cold night and stand for four or five hours in the cold, that these somehow are, they’re the bad players. Now what we’ve got to do… what we need to do now is to get these people, get their voices heard. Make sure the best of America sees them and because this is no longer a Wisconsin fight. This is a national fight and the more that Americans see this fight and see Wisconsin, and signal that they’re on the side of the Wisconsites, I think they are more to win. Ed Schultz also showed the protesters there some of Limbaugh’s hate filled rhetoric bashing the workers in Wisconsin and got the reaction from the crowd. Click here to view this media

Defunded NOAA Stripped funds to administer the Affordable Care Act. Eliminated funds for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Continued $53 billion in oil subsidies Tried to eliminate Davis-Bacon rules for government projects (that failed) Stripped federal workers of their salaries in positions within agencies targeted for defunding Of course, yesterday they defunded Planned Parenthood, FCC allocations for enforcement of Net Neutrality rules, and the entire Affordable Care Act. They also managed to pass a budget 235-189 after the sorriest bunch of bullsh*t debate this writer has ever observed. The vote was down party lines, with the exception of 3 Republicans who voted against it. The most entertaining part of the whole entire screwed-up process was watching Republicans make love to Big Oil while the whole world watched. Oh, note to the Tea Party…hahahahaha!!!! They only managed to cut $60 billion. Broken promises, broken promises. And so soon in your young reign of terror. I hope it was good for them. I felt screwed without even so much as a kiss on the cheek. With that said, all props to Rosa DeLauro for her 3AM rant with energy, passion and focus. Enjoy that moment. There weren’t all that many.

It stems from a video posted by the MacIver Institute Wisconsin alleging that a doctor is signing bogus excuses for teachers protesting in Madison. Because it is illegal for teachers to strike, they called in sick and have been told they will have to produce a valid doctors excuse in order to be excused for their absences. So isn’t it interesting that a right-wing organization would produce a news report saying such excuses are fabricated? Usually, the way this works is that part of the final negotiation also forgives the days missed for protests, by the way, so this is ginned up nonsense from the start. Here’s some information about the MacIver Institute : In December the domain maciverinstitute.com was privately registered with no one willing to lay public claim to the new org. They also have set up a super duper secret Twitter account that you can’t follow without special permission. When I visited their actual website last night, it was still largely lacking substance. Right now I am having problems accessing it but here is a cached version. The site did give some important information however. It gave a glimpse of some of the people involved with this operation – a motley crew indeed. First you have Scott Jensen who still is awaiting his second criminal felony trial. Then you have Michael Dean, from the wild-eyed First Freedoms Foundation, listed as a contact person. Listed as treasurer for the org is Mark Block, the guy that got the stiffest penalty for political campaign violations ever handed down in the state. This new right wing org is also listed on a national directory and it lists Block as also being a contact for the organization. Speaking of Mark Block, he posted an interesting entry on his Twitter account on January 30, 2009 at 3:18pm. I’m wondering if that Tweet inadvertently tells us a few more things about this new right wing outfit. It states the following: “Klauser and Grebe will be calling meeting for Saturday, March 7th. Very important.” Klauser is of course a long-time disciple of former Governor Tommy Thompson and Grebe is surely the right wing Bradley Foundation sugar daddy Michael Grebe. Michael Grebe and the Bradley Foundation are notoriously partisan and have funded some of the most extreme and narrow right wing outfits in the country. The doctor on the form they show in the video is James H. Shropshire. A lookup of his political contributions shows $200 to Russ Feingold in 2000 and $200 to the DNC in 1998. Otherwise, nothing. The MacIver “news wire” has an interesting quote, however: On Saturday, a group of men and women in lab coats purporting to be doctors were handing out medical excuse notes, without examining the ‘patients.’ “I asked this doctor what he was doing and he told me they were handing out excuses to people who were feeling sick due to emotional, mental or financial distress,” said Christian Hartsock . “They never performed an exam–he asked me how I was feeling today and I said I’m from California and I’m not used to the cold, so he handed me a note.” Looks like Christian Hartsock is just an ordinary guy, eh? Well, he’s not . Christian Hartsock, 24, is a director, screenwriter, producer and political columnist and activist. He earned his B.A. in Film and Video Production from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara and currently produces, directs, and writes films including the music video for Guns ‘N Roses’ “Sorry,” as well as the conservative rap music video Victicrat and the short film Sycophant which he wrote and directed, as well as the award-winning feature film The Lives of Better Men which he produced. Hartsock directed the undercover investigation video Teachers Unions Gone Wild which exposed sleaze and corruption in the New Jersey Education Association, earning the accolades of Governor Chris Christie , p roduced B-roll for James O’Keefe’s and Hannah Giles’ investigation videos that brought down ACORN, exposed anti-Americanism at the UN Climate Summit in Cancun and continues to work on investigative journalism videos. He’s traveled to Iraq with Move America Forward to document the Iraq war and was profiled in CNN’s documentary Right on the Edge a documentary about young conservative activists hosted by Abbie Boudreau. He currently writes for several news and commentary websites, including Big Government and Big Journalism, and is Editor-in-Chief of Political Vanguard. So we’re clear on this, Christian Hartsock, the guy “interviewed” and also the guy who probably produced that first video is the same guy who helped out with the smears of ACORN and New Jersey teachers, and he works for Andrew Breitbart. Breitbart has bragged about being at the protests in Wisconsin today. Americans for Prosperity is linked to the MacIver Institute. A Breitbart video smear guy is quoted in an article smearing teachers. Figure it out. Update: Think Progress has much more on the MacIver Institute : MacIver Institute: The MacIver Institute is a think thank that bills itself as “the free market voice for Wisconsin.” On April 9, its website , referring to the Voter Protection Act, warned that “a massive push to facilitate voter fraud” was underway and called on the public to “act soon.” It followed up with another warning on April 13 about the “vote fraud bill on fast track.” After the Voter Protection Act died, an “Open Letter to Wisconsin Tea Partiers” posted on its website thanked them for their hard work in defeating the “Alinsky brigade” and its efforts to pass clean energy and “election deform” legislation. And in a May 10 post entitled “Tea Party Impact Ongoing,” a checklist of Wisconsin Tea Party accomplishments included “Stop Vote Fraud legislation.” The MacIver Institute has numerous ties to the ‘Kochtopus.’ Mark Block, the AFP Wisconsin state director and a key figure in the alleged voter suppression plot, sits on MacIver’s board of directors . MacIver and AFP Wisconsin also share two other board members, David Fettig and Fred Luber. MacIver also works closely with AFP Wisconsin as part of the Wisconsin Prosperity Network , along with another group with ties to Koch funding, American Majority . The think tank also participates in the Koch-funded Institute for Humane Studies’ Koch Summer Fellows Program and is a member of the Koch-funded State Policy Network .
Continue reading …There was a time, back before the late 1970s, when the National Rifle Association (NRA) represented their members. But not anymore. Once they fully re-entered the world of politics on the heels of the Cincinnati Revolt, they became corrupted by the very special interest politics from which they claim to protect their members. With their decision to reject the calculated negotiation of their previous “old guard” board members, who for example, came out publicly in support of a proposed ban on .38 Specials by then-senator Birch Bayh of Indiana, they embarked upon a “no compromise” plan of action for the future. This, of course, made them natural allies of the gun manufacturers, who like arms dealers everywhere are far less interested in who they are selling weapons to than that they sell as many weapons as possible. There is plenty of circumstantial evidence that the NRA’s mission has nothing to do with its members, but everything to do with protecting the profits of the gun manufacturers who support the organization with big bucks – not to mention pay the million-dollar-plus salary of the NRA’s executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre. After all, those lunches at The Palm aren’t going to just pay for themselves. In the December issue of the American Institute of Philanthropy, its “Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report” showed that when including all categories of “compensation” LaPierre came in fourth on the “charity” list with a healthy $1.281 million per year. Apparently, some non-profits can be profitable for some. In February of 2006, a blog called Gun Guys run by the Freedom States Alliance, a 501(c)(3) organization working “to reduce gun violence in America” found that LaPierre’s then-million dollar package was the equivalent of 35,000 NRA membership renewals. One wonders whether these members know that not only are the views of LaPierre and the rest of his leadership team way out of touch with its membership – who overwhelmingly support universal background checks for gun buyers and stopping those on terrorist watch lists from enjoying easy access to firearms (see Part I of this series for poll numbers) – but that they are also subsidizing LaPierre’s lavish lifestyle. This might explain the NRA’s need for constant crisis marketing (Obama’s coming with the Legion of Doom to take your guns!) to misinform the public at large and shake their members’ wallets loose – the NRA’s very own “We’ve got trouble! Right here in River City!” routine. Of, course, the direct influence that gun manufacturers exert over the NRA and their huge windfalls when there are runs on guns and ammunition, also readily explains the NRA’s play to paranoia and fringe politics, and their view that no gun sale is a bad gun sale. In fact, if you’re looking for more than circumstantial evidence, the Center For Public Integrity will make your job easy. This past week they sent out a press release that started in the following manner: It’s no accident the National Rifle Association staunchly supports high-capacity magazines – it gets money from their manufacturers every day. Missouri-based gun company MidwayUSA pioneered a fund-raising tactic called “Round-Up.” The program involves asking customers to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar. The company then donates the difference to the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, a lobbying arm of the gun rights group. Since 1992, MidwayUSA, along with other firearm companies, have funnelled a total of $7.5 million to the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action using the “Round-Up” tactic. MidwayUSA’s wares include high-capacity magazines similar to those used in the Arizona shooting spree… If that doesn’t make the symbiotic relationship between the NRA and the gun manufacturers undeniable, maybe an additional investigation by the Center For Public Integrity, with additional research by the Violence Policy Center (VPC), will do the trick. Among its other delivered nuggets of wisdom, the fact that co-owner of MidwayUSA Brenda Potterfield is also the National Rifle Association Foundation board vice president. Meanwhile, another NRA board member, Ronnie Barrett, manufactures the REC7, according to the investigation, “an AR-15 type assault rifle which comes with two 30-round ammunition magazines.” Then there is Pete Brownell who owns Brownells Inc, “which sells a wide-range of high-capacity ammunition magazines for pistols and assault weapons, including the same capacity Glock magazine as the 33-round magazine used in the Arizona attack.” As you can imagine, it is not NRA members who sponsor its National Youth Shooting Sports Ambassadors. Its Brownells. In fact, when seeking support from his campaign for the NRA Board, he all but admitted that his industry’s interests were 100% in tune with the “overall mission of the organisation”. Arguably the best evidence is provided by Tom Diaz, author of Making A Killing and former NRA member and “gun nut” by his own admission. That is until he discovered in the course of working as an attorney on the House Crime Subcommittee that: the gun industry and manufacturers had changed the profile of who their target market was. It was not about self-defence or the right to bear arms. They were hyper-marketing very lethal guns and they flooded the US with them. The NRA doesn’t represent sport shooters and hunters. They were selling these killing machines. In other words, what the NRA does has nothing to do with its members. They have created ever more lethal gun designs, laughably argue that one needs high-capacity clips for “defensive situations”, (you never know when Genghis Khan and a platoon of Mongol soldiers might be right around the corner) and have supported concealed-carry laws, according to Diaz, all in an attempt to keep selling ever more guns and gun paraphernalia. It’s not about the rights of hunters and sportsmen. It’s simply about the right of Wayne LaPierre and his plutocratic pals on the NRA board to get ever richer as the body count mounts. Even Robert A. Levy of the libertarian Cato Institute, who served as co-counsel in the Supreme Court case that established a second amendment right to bear arms, stated that “I don’t see any constitutional bar to regulating high-capacity magazines…The Second Amendment is not absolute.” But then again he is not in the business of manufacturing guns. He is actually trying to protect what he sees as constitutionally granted rights. Perhaps his final quote was most apropos. Levy said a high-capacity clip ban “…may stop a few of these loony tunes.” One wonders if he was talking about the Jared Loughners of the world or the “charity” organization who would put these weapons of mass destruction in their hands. [This is the conclusion of a two-part series at Al Jazeera English .]
