Hitachi intros Travelstar 5K750 and 7K750 mobile hard drives: 750GB at 9.5mm

It’s a common story, really. Your puny 120GB mobile hard drive has been overflowing for months, and you’ve been waiting for what feels like an eternity for an affordable, capacious SSD . It’s about time to give up the fantasy and get real, and thankfully Hitachi GST is making said pill a touch easier to swallow. The company’s new Travelstar 5K750 (5400RPM; 8MB buffer) and 7K750 (7200RPM; 16MB buffer) have been announced this morning, and they’re the company’s first to feature Advanced Format . In other news, they’re also the industry’s largest drives in a standard-height form factor, cramming up to 750GB (375GB per platter) into a conventional 9.5mm shell that’ll slip into just about any laptop made in the last decade. Yeah, WD managed to stuff 1TB into a laptop drive earlier in the year, but you’ll need a machine that’s beefy enough to handle a 12mm height drive in order to take advantage. At any rate, the drives will also be available in 500GB and 640GB sizes for those who can’t handle three-quarters of a terabyte, and while the 5K750 family is already shipping in volume with a starting tag of $129.99, the speedier 7K750 crew won’t be out until Q1 2011. Fujitsu’s social robot bear is the supertoy of Kubrick’s dreams, almost (video)

Ah, the Fujitsu bear cub social robot. What child or elderly person should go without a “people-friendly terminal” with snuggly-soft fur and a camera in lieu of the ever-popular button nose? The little guy made the rounds briefly earlier this year , but this is our first time making acquaintances. The duo waved at us, waved with us, laughed with (at?) us, and then at some point, decided to arbitrarily fall asleep and ignore us — just like our actual friends! The representative told us this prototype — with a reported 300 actions from 12 actuators (three face, three neck, and six in the body), 13 skin touch sensors, hand grip sensors, a tilt sensor, and a microphone — is a ways off from hitting the childcare / nursing home market. For now, enjoy the pictures below and footage after the break… and if all this seems eerily familiar, hey, we’re with you. A wink and a nod in that direction can be found via the second video. TDK’s see-through and curved OLED display eyes-on (video)

Remember the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness ? At a list price of $1,000, it’d be hard to forget — but with a monochrome see-through display, the whole transparency thing was little more than a novelty on a phone that served little practical purpose. TDK might have the solution with its new transparent QVGA OLEDs , available now to manufacturers in monochrome and in a lovely color variant by the end of the year. At two inches, they offer 200ppi pixel density and are more secure than you might think: the light only shines in one direction, so you actually can’t see any data from the back even though you can still see through the display. At a glance, the display’s didn’t see as vibrant as the best AMOLEDs on the market, but then again, these are passive matrix — and you can really tell in our videos after the break where the refresh scans stand out. Guess that’s the price you pay for transparency, right? We’ve also got some video of the 3.5-inch flexible OLED screens TDK’s got on hand; they’re not transparent, but considering the long, narrow resolution, we can’t help but think they’d make for amazing wristwatches (or high-tech glowstick replacements at raves). Data Robotics debuts 8-bay DroboPro FS with automatic offsite backup option

It was inevitable, really. First comes the business-oriented DroboPro , then comes the network-savvy Drobo FS . Mash the two together, and out pops the DroboPro FS. Design wise, it’s the same 3U form factor that DroboPro users will recognize, but internally, Data Robotics has bumped the CPU speed from 800MHz in the Drobo FS to 1GHz here. There are eight total bays within, and a pair of gigabit Ethernet jacks around back; by default, the second port is used to connect to a different subnet (possibly for offsite file replication), while users can opt for a protection mode during setup if they’d rather it act as a fail-safe (in case the primary port kicks the bucket). More important than all of that, though, is the new Drobo Sync feature, which will be exclusive to the DroboPro FS for at least the time being. During setup, users simply input the IP address of another DroboPro FS; once that’s plugged in, they can schedule automatic offsite backups as often as each hour or as infrequently as once per day. Here’s the thing: this automatic offsite sync only works with a pair of DroboPro FS devices, so you’ll need to pick up two from the start and have ‘em shipped to different addresses if you’re interested in taking advantage. The good news, however, is that an intelligent syncing system specifically scans for minute file changes, so if you only change two cells in a 105MB Excel chart, only a few chunks of data will have to fly over your network rather than resending and overwriting the entire 105MB file. As for pricing? Given that these are meant for small biz, it’s up there — the empty base unit goes for $1,999, while at 8TB model (2TB x 4) lists for $2,699 and a 16TB behemoth (2TB x 8) sells for $3,299. The company also has plans to sell a two-device bundle (8TB units) for $6,399, aiming this at folks who want an offsite solution from the get-go. The box itself is available today from CDW, B&H and a few other e-tailers, and even if you’re not feeling spendy, you can hit that More Coverage link for a chance to win yourself a gratis Drobo FS . It’s a win-win, we tell ya. Panasonic Lumix Phone eyes-on (video)

Right on schedule, Panasonic’s 13.2 megapixel Lumix Phone made its physical debut buried within NTT DoCoMo’s CEATEC booth. And by buried, we mean locked behind plexiglass and out of reach of our own hands. That didn’t stop the light-capturing mechanics of our cameras, however. We’re not sure where the “folding mechanism” mentioned in the press release comes from, but it looks to be a slider phone that keeps a numpad / text entry box out of view. Color options include black, pink, blue, and gold (though frankly, it looked more silver to us). Alas, that also means no chance to provide sample shots from the devices itself, but we do have a smattering of product photos from which you might derive glee — and that aforementioned video after the break. Fujitsu dual-touchscreen concept phone hands-on

Back at Mobile World Congress in February, the mobile UI gurus at TAT showed off their interpretation of a dual-screen phone interface using TI’s powerhouse OMAP4 testbed. Seemed a little pie-in-the-sky at the time, but frankly, the concept device being shown off by Fujtisu at CEATEC this week — created with TAT’s involvement, it turns out — seems virtually ready for production. Or the hardware did, anyway; the software was spartan by comparison, obviously designed to call out a few key use cases where having two giant, glorious 960 x 480 displays right next to each other might come in handy. We were shown browser and email list scrolling across both displays — boring, if not obvious — but what really piqued our interest was a cool photo sharing feature whereby you fling photos you want to share from a gallery on the bottom display to a list of contacts on the top one — very TAT, if we do say so ourselves. Both displays can be rotated between portrait and landscape, creating either a nicely-sized clamshell or a gigantic flip, not an uncommon shape among Japanese phones. Indeed, given the form factor, the entirely-Japanese interface, and Fujitsu’s history, we’re sure this was designed entirely with the Japanese domestic market in mind — and we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it show up in a retail capacity there within a year or so. Follow the break for video. Aaron Sorkin Takes to CNN’s Parker Spitzer to Denounce Palin as ‘An Idiot,’ ‘Jaw-Droppingly Incompetent and Mean Woman’

Aaron Sorkin ( IMDb page ) came aboard the Monday premiere of CNN’s Parker Spitzer to promote the new movie, The Social Network , for which he wrote the screenplay, but used more of his air time to spout his anti-conservative and anti-Republican prejudices, starting with Sarah Palin. Prompted by Kathleen Parker for his assessment of Palin, Sorkin, creator of NBC’s The West Wing television drama, insulted Palin: Sarah Palin’s an idiot. Come on. This is a remarkably, stunningly, jaw-droppingly incompetent and mean woman. (Audio: MP3 clip ) Parker jumped in: “Wow. What do you base that on, the meanness part?” Sorkin explained: “When she talks about real Americans versus not real Americans, that’s a divisive thing. I’m pretty sure I fall into the category of a not real American.” Parker came back with a quip instead of a serious rejoinder: “Right. You’re not real. Because you have those horn-rimmed glasses.” Sorkin proceeded to show his resentment: Because I have these glasses, because I’m from New York, and because I work in Hollywood. Let’s ignore the fact that my father fought in World War II, put himself through college on the GI bill, that his parents were immigrants who came here and my paternal grandfather was one of the founders of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. Later on the October 4 program, Sorkin echoed Bill Maher: “The Democrats may have moved into the center, but the Republicans have moved into a mental institution.”

Sharp Galapagos e-reading tablets hands-on (video)

Sharp’s 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch Galapagos are something to covet. Sharp’s got the Android-powered e-reading tablets heavily on display here at CEATEC, meaning of course we jumped at the chance to try it ourselves. The interface is a bit sluggish, as is pinch-to-zoom on the browser. That said, pages (like our darling Engadget) displayed in full and were crisp, as were the supplied magazine examples (Newsweek, GQ — all in Japanese, naturally). Flash 10 is supported, although we didn’t get a chance to try it. The missing trackball on the 10.8-inch model wasn’t much of a concern, as it was all but redundant on the 5.5-incher. Looks promising now, but with its US launch not expected until sometime in 2011, no telling what the competition might look like by then. More pictures in the gallery below! Sixty million ThinkPads sold to date, Lenovo updates the T Series with NVIDIA Optimus in celebration

Boy, have we covered scores of ThinkPad laptops in the last few years — everything from the introduction of the X300 to the first dualscreen W700 workstation to the older R50e that left unforgettable burn marks in a mattress have graced our internet pages. We apologize for getting all nostalgic, but hearing that sales of ThinkPad laptops will surpass 60 million this month just gets us all sappy. Actually, Lenovo’s estimating that 14 ThinkPad laptops are sold every 60 seconds — it’s certainly impressive, but obviously the history of the company’s business laptops must go onward and upward. And the updated T Series is a step in that direction. Starting today, the T410 , T410s and T510 will have an NVIDIA NVS 3100M GPU option and rely on Optimus to take care of the dynamically switching between the integrated and discrete graphics. While we’re a bit bummed they’re not using the newest 400M Series , the rigs are the first with Optimus to be able to dock and then drive four simultaneous displays. All T Series models are available with Core i5 CPU options and a selection of hard drives / SSD options — the T410 / T510 will start at $1,299 and the thinner T410s at $1,849. We guess this is where we raise our coffee mugs and say, “Here’s to the next 60 mil, Lenovo!” Gallery: Lenovo ThinkPad T Series Update : Hot Hardware is reporting that Lenovo’s tinkered with the Optimus implementation a bit so that both the integrated and discrete GPUs can run at the same time. Hit the more coverage link for some more information.
