LaHood, whose campaign against texting and making calls while driving has led to restrictions in 30 states, says his concerns extend to vehicle information and entertainment systems such as Ford Motor Co.’s Sync and General Motors Co.’s OnStar. “I don’t want people talking on phones, having them up to their ear or texting while they’re driving,” LaHood said in an interview this week. “We need a lot better research on other distractions,” including Bluetooth-enabled hands-free calls and the in-car systems, he said. If we’re going to eliminate everything that poses a potential distraction for drivers, here some of the other things that the feds will have to ban: Car radios or stereo systems Speedometers and engine instruments Passengers Children Make-up All printed material The outside world Each driver can be issued blinders which restrict his vision to the road ahead and special earphones that play Ray LaHood’s soothing words of wisdom to help them focus on their driving.

In the two segments devoted to whether or not the populist host hired illegal immigrants, the show’s hosts never identified the left-wing agenda of the publication. Instead, an ABC graphic speculated, “American Hypocrite?” (This is also the title of The Nation’s article.) Isabel MacDonald, the reporter who filed the story for the magazine, appeared with Dobbs to debate the issue. Co-host George Stephanopoulos teased, ” One of America’s loudest opponents of illegal immigration is called a hypocrite. ” During the four references to The Nation on Friday’s program, none of the show’s journalists labeled the magazine left-wing or liberal. Instead, reporter David Muir would neutrally begin sentences by asserting, “The Nation magazine says…” Additionally, Good Morning America does not treat scoops in the conservative National Review or Weekly Standard as the basis for eight minute segments. Appearing on the show, Dobbs dismissed The Nation as a “left-wing, activist, advocacy publication.” He then directly took on supposedly neutral journalists: “My disappointment is with the national media that has just gone along with this as if it were somehow valid, without doing any reporting. And, by the way, not a single one of the organizations contacted me for a statement, other than CBS News.” The Evening News actually covered the story on Thursday night. Host Katie Couric explained, “Dobbs called the story a political assault and the reporter who wrote it admitted that a contractor had hired the illegal workers, not Dobbs.” However, Couric, too, failed to note the liberal agenda of The Nation. On GMA, Roberts put the responsibility on the ex-CNN host: “But knowing now what you do, will you change how you go about with your contractor? Have you looked into people that are now working for you on your properties?” A transcript of the first segment, which aired at 7:13am EDT, follows: 7am tease ABC GRAPHIC: American Hypocrite? GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Immigration firestorm. One of America’s loudest opponents of illegal immigration is called a hypocrite. Lou Dobbs joins us live to answers to the reporter who charged his contractors employed undocumented workers for years. 7:13 ROBIN ROBERTS: Former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs is under fire this morning for allegedly hiring contractors who employed undocumented workers, people in this country illegally. Dobbs, of course, has long spoken out against illegal immigration. And now he is defending himself against charges he is a hypocrite. We’re going to speak to him live in just a moment. He’s there at his home in New Jersey. And also the journalist who broke the story, she’s here in the studio. But, first, David Muir has more on the story. MUIR: In a new report, The Nation magazine says radio host and former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs- LOU DOBBS: Illegal immigration is costing this country and you as a taxpayer, hundreds of billions of dollars. MUIR: -long outspoken on immigration and undocumented workers and the people who hire them, has himself relied on undocumented workers. ISABEL MACDONALD (The Nation Magazine): There were undocumented workers caring for his million-dollar show jumping horses. And undocumented workers caring for the grounds of his estate in West Palm Beach. MUIR: Dobbs, who has not ruled out a run for political office, took on the claims and the reporter, inviting the reporter on his radio show. LOU DOBBS: A young lady, by the name of Isabel MacDonald, a reporter for the Nation has put together a fairly typical hit piece, smear piece. Did you say that I hired, or my firm hired, illegal immigrants? MACDONALD: I am saying that for years undocumented immigrants looked after your show jumping horses. And, for years, they look after the grounds of your estate in West Palm Beach, Florida. MUIR: The Nation magazine released video of what they say are the reporter’s interviews with some of those undocumented workers. “I’m an immigrant who doesn’t have papers. But I worked for him because he is a very important person.” Dobbs has called the reporting a political assault. And is adamant he nor his company have ever hired undocumented workers. For Good Morning America David Muir, ABC News, New York.

That hasn’t stopped folks from hoping and trying, however, and developer / hacker Cotulla has now produced a video that appears to show an HD2 booting and (briefly) running Windows Phone 7. While a 1:30 long boot process doesn’t exactly make for the most exciting video, it is at least a bit more convincing that the ones that cropped up in the early Windows Phone 7 days , which seemed just a bit too slick to be true. Head on past the break to see for yourself. Continue reading HTC HD2 spotted running Windows Phone 7, for real this time? Plante concluded the report on an optimistic note for Democrats: “The President’s strategists are still confident that if he can energize the people who voted for him in 2008, the young, the minorities, first-time voters, that Democrats can still win, but it’s a race-by-race situation.” On both Thursday’s Early Show and Evening News , CBS reporters attempted to counter big electoral trouble for Democrats by characterizing new poll numbers as “not good news for Obama or tea party.” Here is a full transcript of the October 8 report: 7:11AM ET ERICA HILL: President Obama is spending his weekend on the campaign trail and it includes an important stop in Philadelphia. CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante joins us now with more on that story. Bill, good morning. BILL PLANTE: Good morning, Erica. Since Labor Day, the President has done 13 fundraisers, a couple of major rallies, another one coming up, as you said, in Philadelphia this weekend, but with Republicans far more energized than Democrats this campaign season, the question is, is the President doing his party any good? [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Campaigner-in-Chief; President on the Trail, Candidates on the Fence] BARACK OBAMA: If everybody who fought for change in 2008 shows up on November 2nd, I am absolutely confident we will win. PLANTE: The President was in Maryland, campaigning for Governor Martin O’Malley, but a CBS News poll shows more than half of the voters say that the President’s support for any one candidate would have no impact on their decision. REID WILSON [THE HOTLINE]: This president has been more effective at raising money, I think, than at really getting out and wowing the troops on the stump. PLANTE: This year’s midterms are drawing comparisons to 1994 when a then equally unpopular President Clinton saw his party lose both houses to the Republicans. But not all Republicans are coasting to victory in 2010. New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, who recently got into a fight with a New York Post reporter, is way behind his opponent, Andrew Cuomo, who he tried to goad into a group debate Thursday. CARL PALADINO: Come out and debate like a man. PLANTE: Also running behind in the polls, Delaware’s tea party Senate candidate, Christine O’Donnell. She made headlines earlier this week with her infamous ‘I am not a witch’ commercial. CHRISTINE O’DONNELL: I’m nothing you’ve heard. I’m you. PLANTE: And just released this tamer follow-up. O’DONNELL: I didn’t go to Yale. I didn’t inherent millions like my opponent. PLANTE: Negative political ads are a campaign staple this year, but as Republicans in West Virginia are finding out, they don’t always work. CAMPAIGN AD: And ‘Washington Joe’ does whatever Obama wants. PLANTE: This commercial from the National Republican Senatorial Committee had to be pulled from the air after it was revealed that the committee issued a casting call for actors with a ‘hickey blue collar look.’ The President’s strategists are still confident that if he can energize the people who voted for him in 2008, the young, the minorities, first-time voters, that Democrats can still win, but it’s a race-by-race situation. Erica. HILL: Bill Plante at the White House this morning. Bill, thanks.
Continue reading …California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown was caught on tape in a conversation with an aide, in which that aide called his Republican opponent Meg Whitman a “whore” and CBS’s Early Show, on Friday, didn’t find that gaffe worthy to report, even though Brown was forced to apologize. ABC’s Good Morning America, didn’t do much better, as while they did report on the sexist phrased being hurled at Whitman they didn’t get around to it, until the second hour of their show. ABC’s Juju Chang, in a news brief, noted “Some salty language in the race for California governor. It’s difficult to hear, but it’s a voice mail recording that captures Democrat Jerry Brown” and an aide, “who used a not-so flattering word to describe” Whitman. Chang went on to play a clip of the aide saying of Whitman “She’s a whore.” NBC’s Today show, for some reason, bleeped out the offending word, but did offer the most extensive report of the controversy and unlike their morning competitors highlighted the story in the first hour of their program with Vieira teasing at the top of the show: “And caught on tape. A private conversation between California gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown and an aide recorded on a voice mail and derogatory word is used to describe rival Meg Whitman. The Brown camp is apologizing but Whitman’s camp is calling it unforgivable, today.” Vieira’s colleague, Natalie Morales, then offered a full story, six minutes into the show. The following are transcripts of how the October 8 editions of ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today show reported the Brown gaffe: ABC Good Morning America [8:03am] JUJU CHANG: Here at home, some salty language in the race for California governor. It’s difficult to hear, but it’s a voice mail recording that captures Democrat Jerry Brown talking about police pension plans, followed by his aide, who used a not-so flattering word to describe Republican Meg Whitman. JERRY BROWN: You know, Whitman will give them- will cut them a deal that I won’t. UNIDENTIFIED AIDE: What about that saying that? She’s a whore! CHANG: Whitman called it an insult to the women of California. Brown’s campaign has apologized. … NBC Today [7:06am] MEREDITH VIEIRA: California’s race for governor is a tight and bitter one and now there is a new skirmish between candidates over a private conversation between Democratic candidate Jerry Brown and staffers that was inadvertently caught on tape. And Natalie is back with details on that. Nat? NATALIE MORALES: Meredith, on that tape a Brown aide uses off-color language to describe Republican challenger Meg Whitman, and this morning, as you might expect, Whitman’s camp is not happy. What started as a private voice mail from Jerry Brown to a police union official- JERRY BROWN: Scott, give me a call. Jerry Brown. Love to talk to you. MORALES: -soon became a conversation caught on tape. BROWN: Call me back will you? MORALES: The Democratic candidate for governor thought he hung up the phone, but he was still connected, the conversation all recorded. Brown and his associates were talking tough about Republican competitor Meg Whitman. (Clip of exchange) BROWN: Do we want to put an ad out? I’ve been warned that if I crack down on pensions, I will be that they’ll go to Whitman and that’s where they’ll go because they know Whitman will give ‘em, will cut them a deal, but I won’t. UNIDENTIFIED MAN: What about saying that she’s a (bleep) BROWN: Well, I’m going to use that. It proves you’ve cut a secret deal to protect the pensions. (End clip) MORALES: NBC New obtained the voice mail overnight and shortly after Brown’s camp issued this statement. “This was a jumbled and often inaudible recording of a private conversation. At times our language was salty, we apologize to Ms. Whitman and anyone who may have been offended.” And Whitman’s camp quickly fired back, “The use of the term is an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the people of California. This is an appalling and unforgivable smear against Meg Whitman. At the very least, Mr. Brown tacitly approved this despicable slur and he himself may have used the term at least once on this recording.” While it remains unclear what Brown was indeed referring to the voice mail marks just the latest blow in what has become a full-fledged battle out west. Whitman has been under fire as of late. Just last week defending when exactly she knew her housekeeper in the country illegally. MEG WHITMAN: We hired someone who I thought was here legally, she was not. We unfortunately had to let her go. MORALES: Whitman says she did nothing wrong and accused Brown of creating, quote, “a political stunt,” something her challenger denies. BROWN: Don’t run for governor if you can’t stand up on your own two feet and say, “Hey I made a mistake, I’m sorry, let’s go on from here.” You have a, blamed her, blamed me, blamed the left, blamed the unions but you don’t take accountability. MORALES: And as you can see in this race any and everything becomes a major issue. In the most recent poll of likely voters though, Jerry Brown holds a single digit lead over Meg Whitman, Meredith. VIEIRA: Nasty stuff. MORALES: Dirty politics as usual. VIEIRA: Absolutely. MORALES: Yeah, yeah. VIEIRA: Thank you Natalie.
