China and US in stand-off at climate talks

TIANJIN, China (AFP) – UN climate talks were set to wrap up on Saturday with China and the United States locked in a stand-off, slowing down progress ahead of a major summit next month on global warming. The major powers sparred throughout the six days of talks in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, prompting the hosts to warn on the penultimate day that the atmosphere for negotiation had deteriorated. “I want to emphasise no compromise… on the interests of developing countries,” the Chinese foreign ministry's special representative for climate change, Huang Huikang, told delegates on Friday. “We are losing trust and confidence.” Delegates…

NBC Nightly News Airs Duplicitous Case Against Anti-Democratic Candidate Campaign Ads

Friday’s NBC Nightly News aired a story which went beyond standard liberal bias. It delivered a fabricated case against the peril of unfettered campaign ads as Brian Williams claimed those from “outside political groups…contain outright lies,” yet as proof Andrea Mitchell showed ads, not from “outside” entities, but from Republican party groups and candidates – apparently only Republicans are running misleading ads – with Mitchell focusing on the scandal of how those spots feature actors. After reciting three examples of the supposed deceitfulness, Mitchell undermined her entire story by admitting: “It’s not new that political ads use actors.” She then got to NBC’s real agenda, which she didn’t bother trying to corroborate: “But what is different is the torrent of money from corporations and anonymous outside groups pouring into campaigns this year because of a Supreme Court ruling and other changes in the law.” Following a silly clip of President Obama joking about the innocuous names of groups daring to buy TV time, Mitchell ominously concluded “it’s no laughing matter for Democrats, being outspent 7-to-1 by Republicans in the battle for the airwaves.” Williams set up the shoddy story: “Candidates are spending a fortune this season, and outside political groups are spending even more money. Some of them take liberties with the truth. Some of the ads airing right now contain outright lies. Others have more subtle deceptions.” Over “POLITICS, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE” on screen, Mitchell began: “Almost heaven, West Virginia, backwoods and hollers, just some of the boys at the coffee shop.” Showing a clip of an ad from the National Republican Senatorial Committee with men in a restaurant criticizing Democratic Senate candidate Joe Manchin, she pounced: “In fact, the commercial was shot in South Philly’s Oregon Diner, far from country roads, with actors told to wear, quote, a ‘hicky, blue collar look,’ jeans, work boots, flannel shirts, and John Deer[e] hats – misspelled – preferably beat up.” Mitchell moved on to Ohio, where “a Republican attack ad featured an out of work steelworker” who, shockingly, isn’t really one: “You wouldn’t think there’s a shortage of unemployed workers in Ohio, but they hired an actor right out of Law and Order and some other roles we can’t show you on family TV.” The “they,” however, was not one of the nefarious “outside political groups” Williams warned about, but the campaign of GOP gubernatorial candidate John Kasich. Next, she turned to a left-wing, conservative-mocking comedian for validation. “In some cases the same actors pop up in different states,” she asserted over two screen shots showing the same man identified as an “illegal alien,” in ads created by the Sharron Angle and David Vitter campaigns, a double-use highlighted by the liberal Think Progress site . Mitchell showcased an excerpt from Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert: Those are the same hombres. Look at those two pictures. This is the most terrifying scenario of all. There aren’t enough stock photos of scary minorities out there to represent all the scary minorities we know have got to be out there. Following that clip, Mitchell delivered her “it’s not new that political ads use actors” line quoted above.   Tuesday night: “ With Republican Groups Outspending Democratic Ones, CBS Upset by Speech from ‘Outside Groups ’” From the Friday, October 8 NBC Nightly News: BRIAN WILLIAMS: If you live anywhere near one of these hot political contests in this country, then you know political ads are all over the airwaves. Candidates are spending a fortune this season, and outside political groups are spending even more money. Some of them take liberties with the truth. Some of the ads airing right now contain outright lies. Others have more subtle deceptions. Our report tonight from NBC’s Andrea Mitchell. ANDREA MITCHELL: Almost heaven, West Virginia, backwoods and hollers just some of the boys at the coffee shop. MAN IN NRSC AD FOR JOHN RAESE: Obama’s messing things up. SECOND MAN IN AD: Spending money we don’t have. Stimulus, ObamaCare. FIRST MAN AGAIN: And Joe Manchin supported it all. MITCHELL: In fact, the commercial was shot in South Philly’s Oregon Diner, far from country roads, with actors told to wear, quote, a “hicky, blue collar look,” jeans, work boots, flannel shirts, and John Deer[e] hats – misspelled – preferably beat up. One of the actors, Damian Muziani , has played a lot of roles. FROM WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?: All of those are my final answers. MITCHELL: Even appearing on Saturday Night Live. In Ohio, a Republican attack ad featured an out of work steelworker. MAN IN AD: Now Ted Strickland wants us to keep him in his job. MITCHELL: You wouldn’t think there’s a shortage of unemployed workers in Ohio, but they hired an actor right out of Law and Order and some other roles we can’t show you on family TV. In some cases the same actors pop up in different states, here as undocumented immigrants in Nevada and Louisiana. STEPHEN COLBERT, ON COMEDY CENTRAL’S COLBERT REPORT: Those are the same hombres. Look at those two pictures. This is the most terrifying scenario of all. There aren’t enough stock photos of scary minorities out there to represent all the scary minorities we know have got to be out there. MITCHELL: It’s not new that political ads use actors. But what is different is the torrent of money from corporations and anonymous outside groups pouring into campaigns this year because of a Supreme Court ruling and other changes in the law. PRESIDENT OBAMA: They’ve got names like Americans for Prosperity or the Committee for Truth and Politics. Or Moms for Motherhood. Actually, that last one I made up. MITCHELL: But it’s no laughing matter for Democrats, being outspent 7-to-1 by Republicans in the battle for the airwaves. Andrea Mitchell, NBC News, Washington.

Bill Maher Calls Sarah Palin A Horse’s Ass

Bill Maher on Friday called former Alaska governor Sarah Palin a horse’s ass. In the opening monologue of his “Real Time” program on HBO, Maher brought up the recent brouhaha surrounding Alaska Republican senatorial candidate Joe Miller’s refusal to express his support for Palin as a potential presidential candidate in 2012. “So then Todd Palin, all pissed off, wrote him a bunch of emails full of like grammatical errors, spelling errors,” joked Maher.  The comedian continued, “You mess with Todd Palin, you could wake up with a horse’s ass in your bed, like he does every day” (video follows with transcript and commentary):  BILL MAHER: And Todd Palin, have you heard this story? Okay. In Alaska, Joe Miller, he’s the tea bagger nut who’s running for senate there. They got into a big brouhaha because apparently Sarah Palin put this guy on the map, and then this guy, Joe Miller, was asked if Sarah Palin could be president, and kind of, – “I don’t know.” [Laughter] So then Todd Palin, all pissed off, wrote him a bunch of emails full of like grammatical errors, spelling errors. Don’t f–k with Todd Palin. He will make you an offer he can’t pronounce. [Applause] I’m serious. You mess with Todd Palin, you could wake up with a horse’s ass in your bed, like he does every day. Can you imagine a Democrat woman being joked about this way? The National Organization for Women would be demanding an apology or a resignation within minutes. Sadly, what we’ve seen in recent years is there are absolutely no boundaries involving sexism or misogyny when the butt of a joke is a conservative woman. These days, comedians like Maher clearly flaunt this double standard with total impunity. Must be nice to be able to offend and demean women on national television knowing full well women’s rights groups won’t care due to the politics of the woman in question.

With insightful backwards logic like this, the new CNN show “Parker Spitzer” is certain to be a runaway hit – if just for the comedic value alone. On CNN’s Oct. 8 broadcast of “Parker Spitzer,” disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the co-host of this program, trotted out a theory that seems so peculiar one might think he was pre-excusing what many feel is the eventual Republican takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives. (h/t Greg Pollowitz ) “Let’s switch gears for a second,” Spitzer said. “Earlier today or a couple days ago, Newt Gingrich said 60 seats would be the Republican pick-up. I’ve got a crazy theory for you. I think the White House wants to lose the House. It needs a foil. It needs an enemy. Agree or disagree? ” And believe it or not, one of Spitzer’s guest panelists agreed, sort of. Steve Kornacki, the news editor for the liberal online media outlet Salon.com, said he thought Spitzer was on to something, but said it would be tougher for the White House to villainize possible Speaker of the House John Boehner and/or Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell the same way Clinton and the Democrats did with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich back in the 1990s. “I think you’re basically right at this point when look at, especially when you start looking at the Senate,” Kornacki said. “If the House goes, then you probably want them all to go because then you can sort of set up the dynamic that Bill Clinton had after the 1994 mid-terms when his party suffered a drubbing. You know, it allowed them to go after Newt Gingrich and the Republican Party. The problem is this. Newt Gingrich made himself such an easy mark for Bill Clinton and for the Democrats back in 1995. He made himself the face of their party, and he was a very unappealing face. You say a lot of things about John Boehner, but I think John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, two in the Senate of that matter, they’re a lot more benign as public figures. So I think the dynamic might have been different where you had that train wreck, where Gingrich and the freshman just went after Clinton and shut the government down. It became do you like Clinton, or do you like Gingrich? And the public likes Clinton more than Gingrich. I’m not sure I see the same thing. Ed Rollins, a GOP strategist and senior political contributor for CNN scoffed at the idea. He explained President Barack Obama’s willingness to negotiate with the congressional Republicans like former President Bill Clinton did with his counterparts is uncertain. “The most difficult thing the president would face if you have one House seat or both Houses against you, the idea that Bill Clinton who could sit down and negotiate with Gingrich and with Trent Lott and make deals is not in the DNA of President Obama,” Rollins said. “And what’s going to happen if they lose the House, the Pelosis of the world who are not going to lose their seats are going to basically say you weren’t progressive enough, we’ve lost our conservative members who are the ones are going to get beat, and you better get more liberal. You go make deals with Republicans, you won’t — they’ll be in this tail more so than anybody else. Chrystia Freeland, global editor-at-large for Reuters, also doubted Spitzer’s suggestion the White House would want this because it would be tough for the Obama administration to play that bipartisan role with an unwilling Republican Party and would backfire on the White House. “And what could even be worse though, I disagree with you, Eliot, about this. I mean, I think whether they want it or not, I think they probably are going to lose control,” Freeland added. “But I think it’s really, really bad for this White House partly because the promise of Obama was I’m going to be the bipartisan guy. So this is going to be if he loses control, this is his big chance to be the bipartisan dealmaker. And I think he’s going to be a heck of a hard time doing that, partly because of what Ed points out and partly because these Republicans are not going to play ball.”
