Shark Attack In Australia Kills U.S. Man, Authorities Given Permission To Kill Predator

A shark who has killed a U.S. tourist off Perth, Western Australia on Saturday is being hunted by authorities. The 32-year-old tourist is believed to have been diving off the popular Rottnest Island, 12.5 miles northwest of Perth, at Little Armstrong Bay, PerthNow reported. The shark, described by the divers friends as a 9.8-foot great white, struck around 1.30pm (AWST). Police said two of his friends watched in horror from a private 25-foot Bertram boat as they saw a “flurry of bubbles” in the water. Their friend’s body surfaced shortly after with traumatic injuries. The man had been living and working in Australia for six months, according to The West Australian. The West Australian reports the Department of Fisheries has given permission to kill the shark and it is understood officers are laying bait. “The decision has been made that if we capture the shark we will kill it,” Department of Fisheries regional manager Tony Cappelluti said. “The intention is for us to set some gear at the site of the attack and see if we can capture the shark. The policy is that if there’s a clear and present danger that we can take a great white,” Fox News reported. “The exemption to destroy sharks only applies in WA state waters in an area up to three nautical miles offshore and must be conducted under strict guidelines using a firearm,” according to PerthNow. The death is the fourth fatal shark attack in the area in 14 months. Following reports that shark numbers had increased in WA, Premier Colin Barnett said his government would look into raising the number of sharks fishermen were allowed to catch, according to ABC Australia. “Sharks are natural predators, this is their domain. People are generally aware of the risk,” he said. ABC Australia reported Barnett said he would look into “increasing shark patrols over popular WA beaches.” However, the latest shark attack occurred offshore where no patrols would operate. According to The West Australian Barnett said that August to November was “a risk period” and on days like Saturday, “grey, dull days,” were the times when recent shark attacks seem to have occurred. He said the risk was greater for people out in deep waters diving and spear fishing. 64-year-old Perth resident Bryn Martin is believed to have been taken by a shark at one of Perth’s most popular beaches on October 10, when he went swimming and never returned. PETA recently launched a new ad targeting a fisherman who was attacked by a shark, and said, “Sharks are not the most dangerous predators on Earth, we are.” An annual report by the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File found that an average of five people per year are killed by sharks, while fishing fleets kill up to 70 million sharks per year. — var src_url=”http://pshared.5min.com/Scripts/PlayerSeed.js?sid=577&width=575&height=344&colorPallet=%239FC5E8&companionPos=bottom&hasCompanion=false&relatedMode=1&videoControlDisplayColor=%23000000&autoStart=false&playList=517169818&aol_level=HuffPost:Politics”; if (typeof(commercial_video) == “object”) { src_url += “&siteSection=”+commercial_video.site_and_category; if (commercial_video.package) { src_url += “&sponsorship=”+commercial_video.package; } } document.write(”);

Will Media Report Increase in NYC Shootings Since OWS Protests Began?

As NewsBusters previously reported, a number of Obama-loving media members were enthralled with Vice President Joe Biden's claim that failure to enact the President's jobs bill would cause a rise in murder and rape throughout the nation. Of potentially more immediate consequence, the New York Post reported Saturday that as a direct result of police forces being diverted to monitor Occupy Wall Street protests, shootings in the city have dramatically risen in the past month: The number of people shot surged 154 percent two weeks ago — to 56 from 22 over the same week last year — and spiked 28 percent in the last month. The recent gunplay has now pushed the number of shooting victims this year slightly above last year’s tragic tally — to 1,484 from 1,451 — through Oct. 16. Four high-ranking cops point the finger at Occupy Wall Street protesters, saying their rallies pull special crime-fighting units away from the hot zones where they’re needed. Since Occupy Wall Street took over Zuccotti Park on Sept. 17, the NYPD has relied heavily on its borough task forces, the department’s go-to teams for rowdy crowds. But such protest duty takes the special units away from their regular jobs — patrolling public housing and problem spots and staking out nightclubs plagued by violence, supervisors said. “Normally, the task force is used in high-crime neighborhoods where you have a lot of shootings and robberies,” said one source. “They are always used when there are spikes in crime as a quick fix. But instead of being sent to Jamaica, Brownsville and the South Bronx, they are in Wall Street.” As such, there have been serious human consequences to these protests in America's most-populated city. By contrast, as the Christian Science Monitor reported in April 2010, Tea Party rallies around the country were so peaceful that police departments had to allocate far fewer resources to monitor them. Will this garner the attention of the OWS-loving press? According to LexisNexis, so far it has not. Stay tuned. (H/T Verum Serum via Hot Air )

Dell XPS 14z review

As far as product launches go, Dell didn’t exactly rip the Band-Aid off the XPS 14z. After teasing it back in September, the company let all the specs out of the bag , but stopped short of naming a price and ship date for the US. Well, now we know: it’ll be available here and in Canada November 1, and will start at $1,000 — a price that puts it in direct competition with the likes of the HP Envy 14 and Sony VAIO SA series . Like these other laptops, the 14z commands a premium over cheaper models, with beefier specs and a (supposedly) more luxurious design. With Core i5 and i7 processor options, discrete graphics, USB 3.0 and an optional solid-state drive, it offers a lot of the same specs as its peers, though it manages to stand out in a couple key ways. One, it sports an LG Shuriken display, which crams a 14-inch screen into a chassis normally reserved for 13-inch systems (translation: its bezels are super narrow). And with a starting weight of 4.36 pounds, it’s lighter than a lot of the other laptops you’re probably considering. But are these bullet points enough to make it a smart buy? Read on to find out.
