From Salvaged Tree Trunks Come Very Cool Tables

Image: Nickadoo Tree Trunk Tables There´s a lot of wood furniture around these days that´s parading as green: the wood always seems to come from sustainable forests, which can be dubious . I´ve written about some recent products that do a lot to evoke nature but aren´t totally clear on how they protect it. But I´m very impressed with the work of Nicole Belanger, the Quebecer behind

Cardboard USB Sticks! Are these disposable USB flash drives a green option? (Photos)

A while back, Jaymi wrote an interesting post discussing 7 greener options for give-away USB flash drives . Whilst some made of wood or bamboo are truly gorgeous, they are also overdesigned, and probably too expensive to compete with non-green USB sticks when it comes to give-away merchandising at trade fairs and conferences. Now, the Russian design company Art Lebedev Studio came up with a disposable USB stick, called

Amazon Deforestation Up 1,000% From Last Year

Photo via Celsias Over the last several years, the rate of forest loss in the Brazilian Amazon had been in steady decline, but the latest data is yet again proving that the problem is far from over. According to figures released today, deforestation in the world’s largest rainforest has increased nearly 1,000 percent from the same period the year before, marking the first rise in over two years — though only time will tell if it is merely a disappointing uptick, or a troubling reverse of trends…. How Oklahoma Cut Peak Energy Use by 33%

Image: Money as Wealth Oklahoma isn’t exactly a state that’s known for its progressive energy policies — its constituents, after all, continually elect Senator James Inhofe, who’s perhaps the least green man in all the US Congress. But that hasn’t stopped the state electric company from pioneering a pilot program designed to cut energy use during peak hours (part of the motive for this is a desire to increase efficiency instead of invest in costly upgrades needed to crank up the state’s power plants). And guess what? It was a success. Those participating in the project slashed energy use by an i… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Global Warming Skeptics Unite to Denounce Attorney General’s Climate Witch Hunt

Photo: Red Dog Report I reported previously on Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s crusade to target some of the nation’s most respected climate scientists in an unprecedented fraud investigation. The investigation is largely a political maneuver designed to capitalize on the anti-cap and trade sentiment that’s still strongly held, especially by Tea Party-styled conservatives… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Solar Decathlon 2011 Will Stay on the National Mall!

photo via flickr There has been considerable consternation about the Park Service’s decision to move the Solar Decathlon off the National Mall to parts unknown. The decision to move would of had an negative effect on the students who have been working on their designs based on the specifics of the Mall, and it would have been a lost opportunity to show the world that the US is still serious about clean energy and energy efficiency. Well, good news! Today the Energy and Interior Departments announced that the competition is staying where it belongs–on the National Mall. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
