Backfire! With Cleaner Cars, People Drive More

Sweden, that sustainability superstar, really prides itself on being “green.” It is one of the few countries to decouple CO2 emissions from economic growth. It has switched a huge portion of its heating away from fossil fuels (district heating). It’s the best recycling nation on Earth. It consistently lands in the top ten of rankings of most sustainable nations. Sweden even has made the audacious claim that it will go fossil-fuel free by 2020 . It … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Zaha Hadid’s London Olympic Swimming Pool Already Under Water

Photo: B. Alter: Aquatics Centre, December, 2010 London’s successful bid for the Olympic 2012 Games was based on its commitment to a sustainable legacy: that’s Olympic-speak for maintaining and reusing the buildings for athletic and community use after the big event. The massive Olympic Stadium has just been saved from threat of demolition but now the Zaha Hadid-designed Aquatics Centre is going down the drain. The giant swimming pool has been controversial from the start and rema… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Scientists May Need to Eco-Engineer Habitats to Save Amphibians from Climate Change

Amphibians are a class of animals that are already getting hit harder than most — they’re specifically adapted to a rather narrow range of habitats, so as the climate warms, many are finding themselves literally left out to dry. However, the BBC reports that scientists believe that they may be able to eco-engineer amphibian and reptile habitats to increase their chances of survival in the face of increasingly hot climes. Needless to say, engineering habitats the world over would pose a near impossible feat, though it’s nice to know we’ll be able to save a ha… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Nations React to Rising Oil Costs: Spain Lowers Speed Limit, US Whines

Photo of Spain’s highways: Zaqarbal , Flickr, CC Once again, oil prices are rising around the world. Yes, the turmoil in Libya and the Middle East is jacking up global prices, but it’s becoming more and more apparent that the trend is certain to continue. After all, even Saudi Arabia’s own experts — who sit on the world’s largest oil stores — admit that they drastically overestimated their supplies . Russia, whose huge economy depends on oil, is

So the plot thickens. The Sun posted a video of another rant by John Galliano in a Paris cafe. In my eyes, it shows a sad man willing to say anything to hurt others as a desperate cry for help. I hope he is relieved of his duties and that he seeks out the professional help he obviously needs. I think that Dior had more information on John Galliano’s behavior than what they initially released but I guess they did what they had to do. ps. Thanks to everyone that participated in the first post. I think we had a great diversity of views and opinions. I like it when this blog goes a little deeper than hemlines and color schemes.
