CES 2011: Solar-Powered iPhone Skins and Robot-Like Roadside Lights from Eton

Photos via Jaymi Heimbuch Eton has an impressive line of gadgets that run off solar power or hand-crank power. One of the most attention-getting of the line is the solar-powered iPhone skin, though there were some great looking solar radios on display as well. And while they’re a simple idea, I loved the look of the little droid-like road safety lights displayed at the booth (photos after the jump)…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Recycled Sidewalks Make Cool But Scary Traffic Medians (Photos)

All images courtesy of Tobiah Horton/WRT At New York City’s Queens Plaza, where seven subway lines meet under the foot of the Queensboro Bridge, there are some new, very interesting traffic medians. Just a facet of a $75 million project to reorganize, beautify, and make sustainable the heavily trafficked area, the medians are made from sidewalks that have been demolished in the course of construction. They’re unique and, likely a first for traffic medians, quite cool…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Crowdsourcing Creativity and Community at IDS2011

Speakers at Conversations in Design, credit IDS Crowdsourcing, or “tapping talent from the crowd” is a controversial subject in the design community. Some think it to be evil, a way of getting a lot of ideas for free. One critic ranted that crowdsourcers “have managed to figure out a way to get thousands of people — some skilled enough to earn a decent living — to work for them gratis. It’s an amazing sleight-of-hand.” Yet one only has to look at the entries in the

The US House Global Warming Committee is Officially Dead

Photo: FaceMePLS , Flickr, CC We knew it was going to happen, and now it has: Republicans have killed the House Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming. They did so as promised, shortly after taking office. The committee was designed specifically to shape policy on global warming and energy issues. Since its creation in 2006, it held 80 hearings and briefings, according to

Wind Farm Noise Complaints – Bunk, Not Bunk, A Bit of Both?

photo: FranceHouseHunt.com / Creative Commons We’ve covered the issue (or non-issue, depending on which side you’re on) of wind farms causing health problems in people living nearby for some time–the whooshing sound is reportedly disruptive of sleep if you’re constantly and closely exposed to it. But if you need an overview of s… Read the full story on TreeHugger
