A jury found Bruno Richard Hauptmann guilty of first-degree murder in the kidnap-slaying of the son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh. Konstantin Chernenko was appointed to succeed Yuri Andropov as general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party. (Feb. 13)
