South Korea taunts North with artillery exercise on border

Hundreds of South Koreans were evacuated into bunkers today as its troops fired hundreds of live artillery shells in an exercise to assert its military strength over the North. Pyongyang warned of catastrophic retaliation, adding that its strikes would be “unpredictable”. After a similar exercise last month North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong island, killing two marines and two civilians in its first attack on civilian areas since the 1950-53 Korean War. The North considers waters around Yeonpyeong, a fishing community and military base seven miles from its coastline, its own territory.
