Hurricane Irene is just beginning to hit the East Coast and already many states have declared a state of emergency. With at least 65 million people were in its projected path, following the storm’s movements are crucial to many, especially those in coastal areas. New York City is already taking precautions as it prepares for what may be the worst hurricane in decades. The storm’s reach may be far and wide, according to the AP: The hurricane warning was extended into the Chesapeake Bay as far as Drum Point, and existing warnings remained in effect from North Carolina to New Jersey. A hurricane watch was in effect even farther north and included Long Island, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, Mass. You can scroll down to see a map of Irene’s path thus far, and the predicted trajectory of the storm, from the Huffington Post. The extent of Irene’s destruction remains to be seen. The map below shows the hurricane’s current position, along with its projected trajectory and intesity, via Google.org’s Crisis Response site.
