‘Sarah Palin — You Betcha!’ to Premiere Next Month

A more honest and straightforward appraisal of the Palin phenomenon is promised with this film from acclaimed British filmmaker Nick Broomfield than was seen in the recent hagiographical “Undefeated” which critics found unwatchable (one called it “Triumph of the shrill”). From The Guardian : Nick Broomfield’s Sarah Palin documentary will premiere at the Toronto international film festival in September, according to a tweet by the festival’s documentary programmer Thom Powers. Broomfield’s warts-and-all doc, Sarah Palin – You Betcha, includes interviews with family, friends and former colleagues of the ex-governor of Alaska. In contrast to The Undefeated – a Palin-endorsed documentary that was released last month – Broomfield’s film is likely to be highly critical of the politician. In June a YouTube video showed the Kurt and Courtney director haranguing Palin at a Q&A session before being asked to leave by venue security. It’s not known whether this event will form part of the final film. The film arrives at a crucial time for Palin, who has reportedly been considering a run for the White House in 2012, but has yet to confirm or deny this. From the press release for the film festival: Nick Broomfield’s quest for the real Sarah Palin involves battling the icy snows of Alaska in mid-winter to speak to the school friends, family, and Republican colleagues that in previous days gave their heart, soul and belief to the charismatic, charming, intoxicating ex-hockey mom. But it’s not all plain sailing. People are frightened to talk; Wasilla makes Twin Peaks look like a walk in the park. It’s a devout evangelical community – 76 churches with a population of only 6 thousand, and the Crystal meth capital of Alaska. Broomfield brings his celebrated wit and determination to cracking her story.”
