Any author whose publisher sends him or her on a book tour these days is lucky, seriously lucky. And you pay for that luck with sleep deprivation, airport security lines, and often a reading with only one person in attendance who is usually homeless or mentally ill. I’ve done four tours for The Spellman Files series, and it’s only the sleep deprivation that really gets to me. That said, I thought I knew what to expect with the rigors of the road. But throw in a coauthor/ex-boyfriend who’s new to the world of publishing, and a book tour becomes a different monster. I’ll admit up front that I lived in fear for weeks before my intensive 15-city tour with David Hayward for Heads You Lose (G.P. Putnam’s Sons), our collaborative comedic mystery. We’ve already covered what not to do when writing a book with an ex. Unfortunately, going on book tour together was unavoidable. Here’s how it’s gone so far. In keeping with the format of our novel, Dave and I will alternate days.
