Here’s another salute to the mother and blogger known online as Nerdy Apple Bottom, who had absolutely zero tolerance for anything resembling homophobia directed at her 5-year-old son, whose big wish this Halloween was to dress in the guise of a cartoon girl—Daphne from “Scooby Doo,” to be precise. Mama Nerdy was just fine with this, and she had some choice words for those who weren’t. Mary Elizabeth Williams in Salon: On Friday, the self-described “cop’s wife” hinted about her child’s experience at school that day on her blog by saying, “I am so proud of my brave little Daphne…. He had a few moments where he was worked up about people making fun of him, but mustered up the courage to go for it.
