SPORTS: Redskins release running back Clinton Portis ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins announced today that they have released running back Clinton Portis. In his seven seasons with the Redskins, Portis played in 84 games with and ranks second in franchise history with 6,824 rushing yards and 46 rushing touchdowns. Washington cut ties with running back Clinton Portis and Chicago released defensive tackle Tommie Harris. I haven’t had a chance to check the mailbag yet, but I’m sure there already are some questions about if either player might be a fit in the NFC South. Let’s start with the usual labor clarifications. Portis and Harris would be available to sign as free agents immediately since they were released and didn’t become free agents by playing out their contracts. But the window of opportunity could be very limited. If a labor lockout starts Saturday, as many expect, Portis and Harris would join the other 500 or so potential free agents in a situation where all signings would be frozen until there is a new labor agreement. Brought in with an enormous bang of hype and expectation, this quiet and tame departure seems sadly too fitting. In the end, Portis’ famous enthusiasm and spirit could not overcome all the losses and bodily injury he endured over the past seven seasons in burgundy and gold. It’s been announced that, unsurprisingly, the Redskins plan to release RB Clinton Portis because he’s overpaid ($8 million next season) and often injured (he’s only played in 13 games over the past two seasons). I was wondering if he’d be a possible replacement for RB Brandon Jackson with the Green Bay Packers. He’d be an upgrade, if healthy, but that’s a big if. As well as “Dolla Bill” and “Sheriff Gonna Getcha.” Clinton Portis was released by the Washington Redskins on Monday, ending a charismatic and sometimes contentious seven-year stay that, for a while at least, made him the face of the franchise. Injuries and money led to coach Mike Shanahan’s decision. Portis had played in only 13 games over the last two seasons because of a severe concussion in 2009 and a torn groin muscle in 2010. Last week Portis told WJFK radio: If it’s time to move on, I’ll do that. I’m appreciative of everything they’ve done for me. I had a good time and enjoyed myself.” As usual, Portis had a few pointed things to say, including some that were a bit cryptic. “One of the biggest reasons for why my time is up in D.C.: the drama and the issues, the back and forth with teammates,” he told Mike Wise. Portis added that he’s given everything he’s had to the city of Washington and there is “nothing left for me to prove.” Portis also admitted that things were never the same for him after the death of teammate Sean Taylor, a fellow University of Miami alum and Portis’ closest friend.
